Traditional/gypsey cobs growing rate

Hey all,

I've got a traditional/gypsey type cob, I bought him about 3 months ago and he was supposed to be 5 years old.

Well the vet has now confirmed he's only 4, will be about 4 1/2 at moment so would have been about 4 years and 3 months at the time of purchase.

I measured him when I bought him, he was 14 hands, 2 1/2 inches.

What do you think the chances are of him growing some more?
He's certainly filled out since I bought him, he looked a bit of a gangly teenager when I first got him, and has defintely benefitted from putting on some weight.

Hi, I also bought a Trad cob that was supposed to be 5 but was only 4. He was 14.1 -1/2
but grew to 14.3 by the time he was 7. Hope that helps?

Yeah thanks, that suggests my fella will grow an inch and half or so as well x

My traditional cob mare grew a full hand between the age of 6 and 8 ... She hardly grew at all between 4 and 6! It was all very strange ... They sometimes creep up slowly for a few years and do seem to be slow maturers overall.

Thanks, and wow, thats a whole lot of growing to being doing between 6 & 8!!!!

I had a wee welshie that measured 12.3hh at 6/7 years, and was 13hands 1 and half inches at 11 when I sold her, but I think its typical of welshies to be slow growers and have a late growth spurt.

Just wasn't sure about gypsey type cobs

I too bought a coloured gypsy cob 3 months ago as a 5 year old who was found to be 4 on vetting. He is 15.1hh.

We bought Herc as a 14.2 when he was 4. He's now 12 and at least 15hh (he takes offence to the tape measure so it's not that easy)....But I can't see over the back of him as easily as I used to so he's deffinately grown

I too went to see a 14.2 cob that the selles advertised as 6 years old . but was found on vetting to be 4 . I thought he was bigger than that and when he last had his injections I asked the vet to measure him and he came up as 15.1 , he is now really 6.

They keep growing and filling out until 8 or 9.

Stinky is now 6 and is bum up again, and will need another saddle soon as this year has really developed a lot of muscle and width.

He has grown a good inch since four and is now over 15 hands and will end up 15.1 or maybe a little more. He was 14 hands as a two year old.
