why are they so expensive???? ive seen some really horrid, badley marked and ugly ones for stupid money! Ive had a nose all over the uk, and europe...

I quite like them and have found a nice lad, evenly marked lots of featherand good confo, safe and done a bit of everything I think hes expensive but then having a good look hes dirt cheap..
 
Because they are fashionable at the moment. :rolleyes:
Proper Traditional Cobs with good bloodlines, conformation etc are reasonably priced.
It's the badly put together coloured cob types that seem way over priced to me.
 
Hmmm, there's a gorgeous coloured cob that I see regularly on the grass verge, tethered. OK so he looks a bit rough, needs a good trim-up and probably worming as well, but by golly underneath all that coat I bet he'd turn out a real good'un. He belongs to the travellers and no doubt they'd want their price for him (!!!), but I bet he'd be fantastic, totally bombproof too as he's tethered on a rat run. Every time I see him I think what a fab mate he'd make for my traddie boy.

PS how's Ellie hun?

ellie is fab, having some down time before going off to her yet again new home poor girlie.
 
LOL it doesnt do grooming, a couple of summers ago I took some sun cream to the guy as the cobs nose wsa so bad, turned out it was a loon and had to be sedated to treat his nose! lovely bloke, was a proffesor and got sick of general life so took to the roads.
 
The bubble seems to have burst now though..

last 3 sales i've been to, coloured fillies were starting £50.00 and the colts started at £30.00...up to £200.

the market for them has now passed, so the ones that are left over are 2 a penny

sad really.

I know this guy, highly intelligent isnt he? Gave up his high profile job to be a traveller. Crazy! Noticed his cart has got smaller or was that my imagination? Anyway, completly off topic.

A guy at my yard is "in" with the gypsy community and used to breed alot of traditionals. I can ask him if he knows of anything? You want something broken? Size?
 
Don't assume just because they're tethered they're not looked after.... ;)
It's a mixed world just like any other horse ownership...just depends on the owner, you get the ones looked after superbly and the not so well ones.
Same on the breed/type/whatever you want to call them itself...you get the good crops and the not so good crops. The not so good ones, generally the ones for sale as no good for breeding stock ;)

It's the ones you DON'T see which are the real quality crackers ;) They're well well hidden away out of sight. Some appeared in the ring on Friday such as Rockstar, Abbs etc. You know the ones worth the money when you see them...as they literally are priceless.

They're like marmite. Love them or hate them. But the more you learn about them, the much more wider spectrum you start to understand and appreciate them.

yes please bex.. yep the chaps caravan has gone, it apparently fell to pieces.

binky.. it wasnt that he doesn tlook after his neddy, hes been around for years and the whole local community looks after them both, its not that he has no money etc but in the winters etc he struggles to get a bag of feed for example..

am looking for 14.2-15.2 over four broken must hack out alone and be quality enough for the show ring .. thing is i dont have a budget.. ideally id like to pay around 3k but do have plenty more in the pot.. there a lush dappled stallion 4 white socks 8000 euros.. if he had no balls id of been very tempted.

am currently negotiating price on a 14.2 10yr hes very very nice, nicely marked lots of feather etc. but as always im keeping my options open.

looking at some of the studs sites and normal for sale sites im not surprised.
 
Because live on fresh air and never break, 90% of them make good alrounders....some even come with a complimentory bottle of pig oil :D
 
TBH, if you want something of that quality and no budget necessarily....then would a stallion not be a possibility at all [to get it cut/or leave entire after etc]?

Only asking as not many of the 'top' ones if you're looking for that kind, will be geldings as it's the breeding that it's all about.

Not saying there aren't any quality gelding's out there obviously! But just thinking how much searching no stallion criteria you'd miss out on seeing other stunners that's all. For me, it's dismissed now if it's a gelding, as stallions are more the way forwards in trad showing for me personally anyway. I so wish Hairy was never cut!!!
But, that said, bear in mind most stallions which are exported from breeders here can start at about 12-15k...

So I'm rambling really!!!

We might possibly be getting some 3-4 y/o's in soon to sell here....but I shall have an ask around for you :) Might be worth if you go on the TGCA forum on the website and ask :)

There is a piebald 14.2hh advertised in Mole Valley, no picture though for £2800, ride and drive. Sounds nice. I love them, got mine as a 6 year old from world horse welfare.
 
My friend really fancied Mojo's new buddy, Sophie, and offered the owner £200 for her. Owner said she could go for £1500!! Which surprised me (although apparently her granddad is a famous welsh cob who's name starts with an L) as she's 2 yrs old, apparently broken to ride (though I won't be riding her at that age) but quite shy and has lifted her foot to kick once or twice, though not followed through with the threat.

On the up side, she is well covered, lovely mane/tail, good blood lines (apparently) and quiet to lead/box/trim/tie and can live out 24/7

It feels like a lot of money for an untried filly... Says the women who paid £250 for my baby boy a few months ago.
 
i can see why some of them go top money but others just leave me :eek:

I do like the little lad in the piccie, went to try him, saw him ridden, he has some pop on him then hacked him on a main road in to fields for a gallop... breaks were a bit like... oh nothings happening but imo bit was to low so could of played a part, when we set off you could feel he wanted to go but waited for me to put my leg on , then on the way home it peed/hailed whilst hes buddy was prancing about leapin gin the air he just carried on..

apart fron the traditonal bit, im just looking for some thing that has quailty to show but will also rough it living out doesnt need major rugging up and isnt going to eat more than the husband.

As with everything in this life, you get what you pay for and there's so such thing as a free lunch. Horses are no different, you can't buy the Derby winner for the price of a hack and it's the same with Cobs. There are some wonderful Traditional Cobs, very rarely seen up to now but as the TGCA evolves, they will be seen more and more. Remember the very best are never advertised for sale, they don't need to be.

The cheapies that are seen around the Marts and sales are usually just piebald or skewbald horses, not the real old style Gypsy Cobs.
