My friend who has two sharp ex-racers had no choice but to have them ridden (she had just had an operation) for 3/4 mile to grazing. I had ridden the younger one twice along the route but she had asked me to drive behind both horses.

When I had ridden the route cars literally took no notice of our hi-viz and because the younger one was nervous I tried to ride him on the inside as much as possible but cars still sped past without slowing and these were narrow country roads.

So I drove behind and as a vehicle came behind I put my hazards on and stayed in the centre of the road behind the horses. When it was a straight stretch with no oncoming traffic i would drive as far to the left as possible put my arm out of the window and beckon them on to overtake but also raise my arm up and down to stress slowly.

When vehicles approached from the opposite direction i again put my arm out of my window and did the slow down action.

Every single driver took notice of me whilst I was driving. Why do they not take notice of riders?

Because (for the following traffic at least) you were in their way!

Driver are used to understanding what other drivers mean, they are far less tuned in to the needs of horse riders or an signals they may give
