Hello,

We are looking to buy a trailer to take our two out in - one 15hh Arab x ID but mainly arab so he is quite fine, the other 14.3 appaloosa x Section D.

Our estate can pull 1800 kg and I would guess both the horses weigh about 475 - and was thinking of getting a Bateson trailer. If we go for the Derby we would be fine for weight but I'm not sure if it would just be too small inside. If we got the Deauville we would be about 10kg over - some people we've spoken to say we're being paranoid, others that it's vital to stick to the weight limit, so I would be really grateful for any advice from people in a similar situation?

Especially if you've used a Derby trailer with two of a similar size and have there been any issues?

Can't persuade my husband that we need to change his car unfortunately ;-) and mine is just a little runaround so couldn't pull anything!

Thanks

I had an SUV 4x4 that could tow 2000kg and own one pony. The trailer was around 900 and the only 500 so I was well under but it was quite scary how underpowered it felt. The car also got ruined.

I wouldn’t tow with an estate personally but I know lots do.

I wouldn't tow two horses with an estate, your car will be ruined. Possibly I might consider a single trailer and towing one horse for infrequent trips out and about though.

I'm also thinking the 1800kg limit, does this include the weight of people in the car, tack and other things? My car can tow 2200 (SUV) but I won't tow that much, I'll take the trailer and one horse or pony max. so total weight it's towing is around 1200kg.

I’d strongly suggest you get both horses weighed so you know exactly what you are dealing with, especially as you are going to be boarderline.

Go and view a Derby. Personally I think you will find it on the small side, for me it’s a single horse or 2 pony trailer.

I would feel uncomfortable towing 2 on or above the weight limit on an estate. You have safety reasons, insurance reasons and general excessive wear and tear in the car.

Thanks for the replies!

There are quite a lot of people on the yard who tow one with an estate, we've used it to tow our caravan which weighed more than the trailer and one horse when loaded.

The 1800kg doesn't include the driver but does include passengers/tack etc so would probably mean taking two cars.

I did look at photos of the Derby and thought it looked quite small.

Thanks,
