I've never towed a trailer but am thinking of getting one. I would use a Range Rover so think that would be fine for towing. Any brands better than another? Ifor Williams or Equitrek? What sort of insurance do I have to think about? I would probably get some towing lessons as I understand reversing is the tricky part! Also would like to be able to tow two horses of around 16 - 17hh. Any advice would be great. Friends have said they would drive if I was nervous! Not sure what sort of insurance I would have to take out to allow that. Appreciate any advice thank you.

Two big horses are going to need a big trailer, so you will need a large towing vehicle. The maximum weight for towing will be in the car's handbook. The old Range Rover would have been an ideal choice, but I don't know if the newer ones are the same size.

I don't think there is a "best" make, it is what will meet your requirements, just be careful that you are comparing like for like so the measurements are the same, as all makes of trailers come in different sizes and the smaller ones are only suitable for taking ponies or small horses.

It would be an excellent idea to have lessons in towing. You drive the horses as though there is a cup of water on the bonnet and you are not going to spill it! The lessons would cover safety precautions and techniques and give you confidence.

As for insurance - ask you insurance company, as if you are driving a big car and towing a large trailer you will need to check the total weight and that might have a bearing on insurance.

As for other drivers - again, ask your insurance company. It is usually possible to insure for nearly all circumstances, it is the cost that might be prohibitive.

Hi and welcome.
As said above definitely get towing lessons. On top of checking insurance, get specialist breakdown cover for the trailer so your horses will be transported in the case of a breakdown.

Great advice from @Orangehorse. I'm not that up on trailers but I do know that the older Equitreks were a great build but heavier than the newer ones. I can't tell you what 'newer' means though. If you want to tow 2 big horses you definitely need a really solid build and a towing vehicle that's upto the job
