Well the time has come and I am having to seriously consider getting a trailer - not my choice but an option I have to consider. The problem is which one - the requirements are as follows:

a 17.1hh Dutch Warmblood - (takes a 6ft 9in - 7ft rug)

Mostly local shows - some up to 50 miles away.

Obviously the safety aspects are the primary concern. I know that my present Landrover whilst good for the general side of things is not going to be capable of what I will be asking of it so what would you recommend for towing -

Any help and advice gratefully received -

I don't really want to downgrade from my Lorry but needs must..... :(

A cheval libertie may meet your requirements, they are spacious and have more headroom than most other brands of trailers. The other advantage is that they are very light and the unloading is to the left side of the road, unlike most other brands of trailers which is to the right. Had ours for coming up to a year now and very pleased with it and encountered no problems. The floor is also alumuinon rather than wooden. I would reccommend one of these.

i have a wessex, taz is a 17hh irish draught it also unloads to the left hand side of the road rather than your ifor williams which most of them unload to the right, i think it is the wessex champion, its the one up from the clubman, its very light and according to the specs it is actually bigger than the ifor 510 has nice leather padding on the sides and on the partition to stop them from hurting themselves, and has one of these plastic floors that isnt meant to rot...can you tell i love my trailer??

We transport a 17h and a 16.1 together (both IdxTB) in the ifor williams 510 trailer, and they have loads of room. It tows really well too. We've had it 4yrs and it looks like new still. We have a discovery to tow it - a landrover should be great. Or is it on its last legs?

Thanks for all the recommendations - with regard to the towing - my Landrover, whilst not on its last legs is I feel more than capable of towing, just I have some concern over its 'stopping' ability. The weight would be well within its capacity, but I would feel happier with something a little heavier if towing - Our mare is a 'large' warmblood, and according to the vet ' still has growing to do'. I have always preferred a lorry but the time has come to make a change and I am looking at the trailer option for the future.

I shall now have to spend some time comparing all the recommendations and start looking for another car - oh well shopping - I should be happy, but in reality not looking forward to it. The lorry has always been a good storage place for all the extra rugs, tack and other ancillary bits and pieces, so a clear out is also on the cards. I have been told that it has passed its plating for this year so may have the option to spend more than I hoped if I can sell it with a year's plate.

An Ifor Williams would be perfectly sufficient - i used to travel my old horse who was 17.1hh in a 505 and he had enough room. I have a Landrover and I don't think you can beat it's towing ability. It has a higher towing capacity than most other 4x4's so I really wouldn't worry about the stopping ability. As long as it has passed the MOT then the brakes would be more than safe and capable to stop the vehicle with the trailer behind.
