I currently have a lovelt horsebox (well my horse likes it) Its very roomy and forward facing (she doesn;t like herringbone as is quite long and gets stressed).

I can't drive my lorry so have to rely on others, however I now have my trailer licence. So we are considering getting a 4x4 - but not a juicy one (as I do around 20k miles a year) and a trailer. Any suggestions? I want to feel safe towing it and that the trailer doesn't move, I also want my horses comfort as a priority. I really don't want to sell the lorry but this may be the way forward

I used to have a LWB Mitsubishi Pajero that I used to tow my HB505 with, and it was really good even with two horses in, the only reason I got rid of it was that I couldn't justify keeping it once I got my lorry.

i used to have a mitsubishi pajero lwb 2.8TD and had to get rid of it after 2 months i drive about 20k miles a year and was getting between 23-25 mpg.less when towing. i was filling up every 2 days £75 a time. i even sent to a diesel engine garage and they said that was about right. i now tow with a nissan aventura double cab . it is less juicy getting about 35mpg

You could try getting a 4x4 and converting it to run on LPG - Liquid Petroleum Gas which is currently 45p per litre and the conversion costs about £1500. Or you could buy one that is already converted? My Jeep Cherokee cost me £1900 ready converted.

Yep I second that, wonderful things they are, tow like a dream, very comfortable too. Mine is a SWB 2.8 TD I love em!

i have a 2.5 gls td shogun, tows like a dream, but i'm lucky if I get 25mpg. It also has rubbish boot space, (my old polo was better!). Unless you are going for a brand spanker, then the older 4x4's tend all to be gutsy if they are heavy enough to tow. With that kind of mileage (20k pa) would it not be worth considering a smaller lorry which you can drive?

just a thought.

ps. converting to lpg means you'll be doing away with the little boot space you have, as you need a second tank fitted

The other option was to do my HGV as I don't think with my horse tack etc that we will legally be 3.5T in these supposedly 3.5T lorries?

you don't need an hgv to drive a 7.5 tonne, you just need your C1 if you passed your test after 1997

dvla website will give you all the info you need re' the test etc.

The C1 only works out about £100 cheaper than HGV so HGV is easier I think as I would then be able to drive any rigid lorry

I have a SWB 2.8 td auto Pajero and I love it. Tows my 505 and one horse comfortable, drives lovely but boy is it thirsty!

I do about 20k miles a year minimum for work and when it was my only vehicle I was spending 500 per month average on diesel. I got 18-19 mpg on average and it crippled me.
I now have it parked outside the house 6 days a week and only use it to tow, bought a cheap peugot 306 td and save about £350-400 a month now. car paid for itself in a matter of weeks.

i would do that then, it's dear, but you'll save in the long run with the cost of fuel, and having a lorry is soo much easier with 2 horse and room for all your stuff.
