Has anyone changed the 7 pin plug on a trailer to a 13 pin plug that can plug straight into the tow vehicle without an adaptor?

My trailer lights are only partially working, (indicators work, brake lights don't) and I suspect that the plug is something to do with it. DH is happy to rewire plugs etc as long as I provide him the materials (or it will just fall off his to do list).

Can answer that one for you this evening when I see other half if nobody else has answered in the meantime, as I know he has done such things.

I haven't done it myself but a friend had it done and it was very straightforward. She got our local trailer servicing person to do it when he serviced the trailer and I think he only charged for the plug as it was literally a two minute job.

A good handyman or someone like that should know what to do. Having watched it being done I reckon I could give it a go myself now! Plug is normally relatively reasonably priced to buy. The worst part will be getting the last plug apart if the screws have corroded, and then testing them to make sure you have the wires all in the right places!

I have the man handy, I just need to know what part to buy him!

When I had lights that were only partially working it was because the lid had fallen off the junction box under the trailer and water was getting in. The farm mechanics who "serviced" it had failed to notice this. Needless to say I have not been back to them! Anyway that's worth a quick check.

Google is your friend, there is bound to be a Youtube video covering this. In the meantime clean your present plug with WD40 and open up the pins with a knife it might just be a bad connection. I have wired many trailer plugs, but not the one you describe. Usually there is a diagram on the packaging. Go into a trailer dealer or car part shop they will be able to give you the correct stuff.

OH advises it depends on the tow vehicle - if the tow vehicle has a 13 pin so it’s 13 pin to 13 pin no adapter. If that is the case then possibly wrongly wired. Suggests plugging another vehicle you know lights work on to car. If that is fine then start working way through the trailer wiring.
