trailer help.

i've just paid for my first trailer today, a wessex olympian trailer, and it is getting delivered on monday, so just want to know what i need now, i have my wheel clamp, a bull dog one, and a hitch lock box, and have never towed before so am a complete novice, all help would be appreciated, car isnt getting a tow bar until the 28th so have plenty time to get things sorted

If you don't have a hitch on your vehicle make sure they park it somewhere sensible because you won't be able to move it ! When you do get the tow hitch, take yourself off for a nice drive with an empty trailer and find a large car park to practice your reversing, it's easy.
 
I'm presuming you passed your driving test before 1st January 1997? Cos if not you need to pass a test to be able to tow your trailer!
 
Agree with practising with an empty trailer, especially the reversing bit. Took me years to work it out and am only just ok now :rolleyes:

I can remember to turn the steering wheel the opposite way to where you want to reverse to but actually doing it and getting the trailer where I want it takes a lot of time.
 
I can only reverse my trailer if I do it 'taxi-driver' stylee.....ie looking out of the rear view window with my arm stretched accross the back of the front passenger seat....if I try and do it the proper way using the mirrors and looking forwards....well, I could end up literally anywhere:D
 
i'm not the one who will be driving the trailer so the having to pass your test at a certain time doesnt count as my mum can drive a trailer on her liscence, wont have to move it untill we get our own tow bar as we have an allocated space for our trailer at the yard like all liveries do, do i need to get the trailer ties, the elasticy ones or can they just be tied in with lead ropes?
 
they can just be tied in with a leadrope to a piece of thinned out bailer twine as you would on the yard.

as for things you need... make sure your wheel clamp and hitch lock are good ones. Cheap ones are cheap for a reason.
 
you may need to check if the new law has come into practice as I was told that I couldn't drive with anyone supervising me unless they had passed the test, regardless of whether they had passed before 1997. For example mym mum who passed her test in 80s could NOT supervise me as she hadn't passed the trailer test. She can however drive the trailer....whic makes me so mad. I would go anf do the trailer test. Its very easy and well worth the money if you do an intensive course :)
