Am in the process purchasing my first trailer and would like some guidance or recommendations for a hitch lock and wheel clamp I can put on the trailer when not in use as although it'll be on a locked gated yard, I'd rather take extra precautions! Thanks all in advance!

we have a very easy wheel clamp (have had an sas bulldog before too) we have two special nuts on the wheel that this bar clamp then locks on to- takes seconds to take on and off (with the key!) having struggled with others, I can't remember the brand name atm though!

If you are insuring your trailer for theft, then check with your insurer - most of them will provide a list of approved locks/hitches and unless you use one of these, your insurance is void if the trailer is stolen.

Bulldog range is excellent.

our insurer only requires the ifor fitted hitch lock to be on for it to be covered but still worth checking. OP I can check what ours is when home at the weekend!

I have one of the bar wheel locks and the hitch has a barrel lock that is part of the design. This means the trailer can't be stolen whilst out.

couldn't be doing with the others having come back in the dark from evening showjumping. The bulldog one was ok but requires you tighten it with an allan key before putting the lock barrel in... allan key is one more thing to loose!

We've had 2 of these on a rice and an ifor (different wheel spacings) and really wouldn't be without it. Also super easy to put on and off when we leave the trailer in a hill car park for example.

Maybe I'll try one of yours then. Mine is a nightmare. It fits onto a special nut like yours does but goes round the tyre as well so if you don't line it all up right it won't close. Which means shuffling backwards and forwards when you park until one of the special nuts is at the right angle to the ground. PITA!

Thanks Suechoccy, didnt realise the insurance would specify (am new to trailer ownership!) But having checked my insurance they haven’t specified a brand of wheel clamp just that one needs to be fitted if the trailer isn't in a lock up unit of some sort.

Thanks Ester, really helpful, I’ll look into it. Am looking to purchase a CL trailer so need something that’s compatible with that….

they come in different sizes iirc so should fit most wheels :)

?Like this one Jess?

its the other one we had it it was annoying, we have to be a bit lined up with the yellow one above (ie have to avoid the ground and the tyre guard) but it will fit both ways round so you don't have to get the right nut in the right corner.

I have an SAS hitch lock and wheel clamp. Don't forget to put the wheel clamp on one of the back wheels, or thieves will just use a high hitch and drive off with the front axle off the ground.
