Hi when pulling away from standing my Ifor Williams hb505 hitch makes a clunk noise. I was advised it would be the damper wearing but had a new one put on and it’s still the same. Has anyone else had this problem?

Is there some grease on the towball/hitch? I had a slight clunk now and again and solved it by greasing those. Just have to remember to put the townball cover on pronto after unhitching so I don't get grease on my knees when I'm putting stuff in/out the car boot.

I had this with my old Rice/Richardson, it used to clunk when I tried to reverse and actually wouldn't reverse at all in the end. Dad bought a new coupling cylinder for it - I can remember watching him one night when he was putting the damper rod back in the damper housing - its a gas cylinder which is under huge high pressure and it took a lot of effort and energy to insert it. From memory there's a screw inside it somewhere that alters the amount of play in the damper. Maybe its this that you haven't adjusted properly (if its the same as mine). It was 100% better than it was and very rarely played up after that when reversing.

I would ask my Dad but sadly he's not here anymore. He used to service my trailer for me, bless him.

Sorry to hear about your Dad
Thank you, yes I miss him more for his endless love and support than his engineering knowledge but I do and will miss the second also! Its amazing how little I know about cars/trailers and how I wished I'd listened more when I had the chance :)
Will try that thanks
yes let us know how you get on.

My trailer makes a horrible banging & crashing not generally when I pull away but if the road surface is rubbish the noise is horrendous. Also had a new damper put on it , greased towbar etc all to no avail so just put up with it.
