I used E&L to insure my horse about 10 years ago and got completely ripped off. Since then I've been absolutely anti them, swore I would never go near them again.

I'm borrowing a friends trailer in August (taking my coblet on holiday

) and have been looking into insuring it for the week / fortnight. The only ones I can find doing short-term insurance for trailers you don't own is E&L - they do something called 'TrailerGuard' that looks perfect and would only cost me £14.

Are E&L any better these days?? Really don't know what to do!

Problem is, I can't find any alternative. It's not like the others are more expensive, there really don't seem to be any others.

Don't suppose anyone has come across any other company that will insure a hired / borrowed trailer for a couple of weeks?

I got ripped off with E&L in 1997, never again. Try NFU if you haven't already, they can be relied on.

Try calling Julie Andrews Horse Insurance Services
she is a broker but will know who you can get short term cover with other than E and L

Type in Google you should find her

Whilst I would avoid them for horse insurance, I thought like you they were the only people offering trailer hire insurance. I have used them a few times when I've hired a trailer (currently have one on a 6 month hire) I've worked on the assumption that as the trailer is locked in a compound and as part of the hire agreement it also has a wheel clamp on it is pretty safe from theft. The insurance should only then be needed in the case of an accident which I'm hoping (fingers crossed) is very unlikely. They were very quick and efficient about setting up the insurance cover it as was all done on line or over the phone. But as with most insurance companies the proof of the pudding is in the claiming! I think for a low risk insurance cover like you need it's probably OK to use them, but certainly worth talking to Tedster's contact.

I too had reservations about E&L but felt I had no choice, so it's good to hear from Tedster that an alternative might be available for the next time I hire.

As my insurers I tried them before resorting to E&L but they don't do short term cover - annually only. I even shopped around for annual insurance for the 6 month hire I've got now, to avoid E&L but it was over double the price.
