Hi all
I wonder if anyone can answer a couple of questions;
1. Is it a legal necessity to insure a trailer?
2. How much (roughly) does it cost to insure an average trailer?
Thanks in advance

You would want at least 3rd party insurance while towing a trailer. Most car policies will have this as standard, but worth ringing to check.

Cheapest way to insure your trailer for accidental damage/theft is to tag it onto your horse insurance policy. You are probably looking at £50/60 a year depending on the value of trailer and security measures you have in place.

No I don't think you have to insure your trailer. I rang my truck insurance to tell them that I was starting to tow with it and I think they said that I would be covered 3rd party if the trailer hit something but that the trailer wouldn't be covered itself.
I insured trailer for theft etc with Anthony D Evans for £89 for the year I think.
Next year I will check what it would cost to add to horse insurance policy as I never checked them

I don't think it has to be insured. My insurance is quite pricey (£150 a year) but I think thats might be because it was stolen a few years back. I should look around for cheaper quotes but never get round to it.

Some years ago a friend was towing a trailer (no horse in it) when the connecting pin sheared off (it was a pin hitch not a ball hitch) and the trailer veered across the road into the path of an oncoming car, killing one of the occupants. So without insurance he was scuppered. His vehicle policy said that the trailer was insured while it was attached to the vehicle. I had my trailer added to my vehicle cover with NFU, it costs an extra £30 per year.
