I've just bought my first trailer :-) I collect it Saturday, who do you recommend I insure it with?

I just insured mine with NFU, it was £65 for the year then I added breakdown recovery on for £40, so £105 for everything

When I bought my trailer, I was told by the company I insure my car with that the trailer was covered in the car insurance? I hope this is right, am now starting to get a bit worried as most people seem to have separate insurance:confused:

I think you'll find oyu need seperate insurance. If your trailer was trashed or stolen, your car insurance definitely would not pay out!

My YO has just said the exact same thing to me so there may be some truth in that. I'm going to ring mine later and see if they cover it.

I've just been looking into this for my trailer.

NFU would cover it for roughly £200 but this is if added to an existing equine policy. If your horse is not insured with them they won't insure your trailer as they don't do a "stand alone" trailer policy. I then got a quote from their car insurance department but to get full cover for the trailer was an additional £300 which I wasn't prepared to pay.

I phoned a broker ( maybe SEIB, can't remember ) and they said the same as NFU - they can get trailer cover but not as a stand alone policy, I would need some horse insurance too. As my quite from NFU for 2 horses was extortionate this year I have cancelled it so to insure my trailer I would have to re-insure my horses.

In the end I joined BHS for my horse liability cover and added my trailer to my existing car insurance, it was already covered 3rd party by them but I upgraded it to fully comp for an extra £20.

This doesn't cover me if it is stolen but due to where it is kept NFU wouldn't cover that either!
