Trailer insurance

Has anyone got trailer insurance with a company that allows a hitch lock (bulldog one or similar) Rather than wheelclamp to be used for security in their T's and C's?

Mine will not be stored in a secured locked yard and I've found a few companies that will still insure but they all require wheel clamp rather than hitch lock!
 
Michen, when we bought the trailer I researched this and unfortunately couldn't find anyone to insure without a wheel clamp - mind you having had stories from friends who have had/know of trailer's being stolen, the one thing in common seemed to be either no wheel clamp or the wheel clamp on the front wheels. One friend who had a hitchlock found that her trailer was simply chained up to the back of a truck and towed away :(
 
I just thought the hitch lock looked easier to put on than a wheel clamp!

It's really just to keep the insurance company happy...

And with wheel clamp and hitch lock I have heard! Ah well. Wheel clamp it is!
 
Nfu don't need anything however you have to insure your car with them too.

I have a wheel clamp which goes on to two special wheel nuts. It's very easy. The dealer put it all on for me.

Ah mine is a company car so it's fleet insurance... No use there.

Is that a bulldog one?
 
I keep my trailer on a bit of scrub land next to the farm where I stable my horse. It's not particularly secure, however we are in a rural area with not too much crime. I use a hitch lock and a bulldog wheel clamp, got them both secondhand, I think I paid £90 in total. The wheelclamp takes about 3 minutes to take on and off, would be faster but it can get a bit stuck together sometimes. Definitely worth it for piece of mind though and it also helps keep the trailer stable so I don't have to have the handbrake on when it's stored.

Is that a new thing with NFU? I had my trailer insured with them from when I bought it in 2010 to when I sold it last year and that was the only thing I had insured with them.

In answer to the OP, I had a hitch lock and wheel clamp, they came with the trailer but I would definitely have the two again if I got another trailer. I always put the wheel clamp on the back wheel. Took me all of 5 mins to take them both off or put back on, so no hassle.

This was April 2015. I have heard similar stories before about them they have some odd rules about who can have cover.
 
Funnily enough I only insured my trailer on renewal yesterday. Annoyingly I only received the letter on the 1st January and my insurance expired on the 31st. Luckily I last used it on the 30th Dec, and although I had planned to go out on the 3rd January jumping my horse got injured so we never went. I am so glad I never took him out now as I wouldn't have been insured and shudder to think about it!

I have a wheel clamp and have alwasys used this to secure mine. Its an old fashioned type of one that we got from an AA shop with two parts so you push them together to lock (like the capital 'H'. I used to find the lock really difficult to undo so Dad altered it and I use a padlock to clamp it now.

I have never really though about it but I suppose by altering the clamp in this way I am probably not covered on my insurance for theft!

They are only covered on the road for accident related liability if attached to the vehicle they are insured with but their fully comp insurance covers all damage to the trailer. Some of their agents dont explain it very well.
I do believe the NFU insure horse trailers separately but you are right general and livestock trailers can only be added to a vehicle policy.

Just for future reference from one farmer to another check out a company called rural insurance I was staggered at what we saved on our vehicles (50% over NFU)and all trailers are automatically covered up to 50kwith the vehicles at no extra cost. We did carefully check them out and the underwriters are highly respected within the industry and are the largest insurers of bloodstock worldwide.
The flip side is they are only interested in rural business insurance so reletativly low risk for them.

It might have been something to do with the fleet insurance on the vehicle because it belonged to my OH and I wasn't named. I can't remember. I had gone as far as paying for it then they phoned back and said no.

I'm in an unusual position of having no vehicle to my name. Similar to the op I believe.
 
We have ours insured n our house insurance policy, but for the life of me I can't remember the name, however we do not need to wheel clamp - so definitely worth shopping around.
 
Update- Kbis will insure with a hitch lock instead of wheel clamp :-) they are even happy with just the manufacturered inbuilt hitch lock!
 
get a ball hitch lock that you secure in the 'ball' bit and then a box hitchlock over that and a wheel clamp that they cant get to the wheel nuts , oh and put it on the rear wheel otherwise they can just tow the trailer away by tipping it up (somehow) but thieves tend to be experts in that sort of thing
