My mare has become tricky to box, to say the least recently.

Now for daft question!

Is it safe to practice loading her in a flat/level parked trailer NOT attached to my vehicle?

Or do I need to hitch up for stability's sake?

Thanks!

We have a trailer permentaly in the yard with ramps down, our yearling filly goes in and out at will, when we were trailer training her we put her friend, the old boy in and fed the pair of them in it, as long as the jockey wheel is down the trailer is stable no need to have it hitched to the car.

I'd always have it hitched, or at least properly jacked up and fixed - imo the jockey wheel is not designed to take weight of horse and it's a wheel so obviously can move!

That's what I was worried about, that the whole thing would be depending on the handbrake!

Oh well I'll be **** hot at hitching up won't I :p

Yes, you can use a trailer not hitched up but you have to think carefully about jacking it up front and back otherwise it will tip. The jocket wheel is not designed to take that kind of weight so if it's not got stabilisiers front and back you'll need to get a jack. We had the trailer propped up with bricks, front and back, for a week to practise loading.
