I have a trailer - would LOVE a little lorry, for safety and space, but unfortunately it's too costly as it would mean 3 vehicles on the road for us, one of which would still need to be a 4x4.
I have a rice richardson trailer and it's lovely. I would love a small lorry but like Baileyhoss would mean my mum and dad would have too many vehicles on the road
I had a trailer and loved it as we didn't use it too much (twice a month) and it didn't matter if it was stood. I now have a three horse lorry which I love. I do use it at least once a week though so feel like I get my moneys worth. I think it depends on how much you will use it xx
I have a trailer. I would love a lorry but in order to afford one a couple of the ponies would have to go and that isn't going to happen so I will just stick with my little shed on wheels
The 'which is best' posts are difficult to answer as everyone's circumstances are diferent. I used to have a Bateson Deauville Trailer & 4x4 & it was great. It towed well & did everything I wanted at that time. There was a couple of saddle racks in the front as well. A great trile that I'd recomment to anyone.
When we got a second horse & we were travelling further a field & staying overnight then the trailer was not ideal for us so I sold it & bought a 7.5 ton Daf. This carries both horses easily plus tack, plus us all & has living which is what we needed & the trailer couldn't do.
Parts & servicing & running costs for a large 4x4 are quite expensive, a lorry's a little more costly. Tax on my 4x4 was more expensive than the lorry & insurance & recovery were a little mpore as well. Road fund licence is cheaper on the lorry than the 4x4.
People moan about the cost of plating, but if you keep on top of maintenance on the lorry then you should not have extreme bills that some have at plating time. Many lorrys only ever get looked at at plating so there is a year of maintenance etc to catch up on.
So which is best.....lorry?.....trailer.....depends o your individual circumstances.
I have always tended to have trailers but used to get so nervous about the horses travelling in them, my husband got so fed up with me stressing that he bought me a 7.5 ton box
I agree that you have to use a lorry fairly reguarly to make it cost effective, they were not designed to be standing for long periods of time either. Ours is used at least twice a week, usually more.
Horsebox, just got one & saved loads by spec-ing it the way we wanted. Off the shelf looked great but why pay £XXXX more for things you'll never need.
I was shocked how little the tax was for the yr & the insurance is minimal too.
Somewhere dry to sit, relax make a cup of tea & be able to use a clean toilet is worth it's weight in gold.
horsebox. a little 3.5t
i go out once a week sometimes twice. its great- easy to drive, low cost. ive got an aygo for general driving which is mega ecconomical- £35 a year road tax!
horsebox- a[pprox £180 raod tax, £150 service, £55 MOT.
Ive got a horsebox but only warrant a trailer really but bratty horse just wont stay in a trailer. Saying that I feel my horse is safe in my wagon and he travels great. Mines just gone in for its plate so we will see how much it costs then eeeeek. Other than that its £350 for insurance and full breakdown and £180 for tax. Its been my dream to own a wagon and finally Ive been able too, it just seems a large expense for one horse though.
Definately horsebox but we use ours weekly. Horses have so much room they stand happily on the lorry for hours. Load and travel perfectly. Not many lorries get tipped so horses are as safe as they can be. Load the lorry with everything the night before and just have to get up and load. My 3.5T has a little one ring stove and a seat so we sit in the grooms area with a cup of coffee in the bad weather.
