Trailer or lorry and why??

Trailer and x trail, trailer new, car reliable but got isuzu double cab if required which is nearly new, for what indo and money lorry out PCMCIA question, but do use trailer for sheepdog and duck displays and dontvthink ducks would like steep ramp, and bit OTT for show grounds.

I've just bought myself a 3.5t lorry. I just prefer lorries as they are easier. No hooking up, just jump in and go ;-)

Lorry!!!! why would you want a gas guzzling 4x4 and a pokey little trailer when you can have a mobile gin palace that also carrys horses for the same money:D

yes that is a good reason the OPs question is a little
pointless as everyones needs vary, for me I do a fair weekly mileage just needing a small amout of tools and equipment so running a 4x4 daily would be expensive just to tow once a week or so.. ,but isnt having to have a tachgraph a bit of a pain for you ??? mind you would need a "O" licence for a 7.5 ton lorry ....

Whilst I would LOVE a lorry, I can't justify the expense of having to tax, plate, insure and run something that would only get used for the occasional weekend. For me it's a Paj LWB and a trailer. Then the 4x4 can be used when it's not towing as well.

Trailer that gets towed with a defender. Dad all ready had the defender before I got the pony and the trailer dosent have seperate tax mot and insurance and it wont be as badly affected by sitting round for longer periods of time. I would love a lorry but I dont really need one and theres room in the defender for dad to bring a mini stove to make tea and coffee when we are out.

lorry 100%

loads of room to get ready (hoss and rider), good storage, cooking, fridge, sleeping etc

had a trailer briefly and its just a pain at shows, also doesnt feel as safe.

Have a LR discovery & ifor trailer. Hate them, want a lorry! Disco is too expensive to run everyday, & always breaks down so have to borrow another 4x4 anyway! We go away quite often with the pony, so have to stay in hotels, lorry would be so much easier!! Need to win lottery first though.....boo :( doesn't help that OH never comes to shows so doesn't see how much easier life would be with a lorry,(only need a little 1!!) Although he always moans at how much juice the disco uses!!!

If you already have a towing vehicle then I would say Equitrek with the bit of living. That's what I had but now towing vehicle was only doing 800 miles a year and was getting tired we bought a lorry as didn't really want the expense of buying another 4 x 4 we don't use so spent that money on a nice lorry which should hold it's money better than a 4 x 4

Own and have done for about 10 years now 3.5 tonne boxes....
But.... i drive around daily in a Land Rover Discovery!

Sensible thing to do would be to get a trailer (plus one of my broodmares loads better into a trailer so for stud visits need to enlist the services of a friend to take her!)
BUT.....
I wouldnt pass the trailer test (farmer tried to briefly teach me at 18 - i was terrible!)
The trailer test is expensive if you add in all of the tution/retests lol!
I prefer the ride for the horse in a box

I never really use my box for horses, its more often or not used as transport for family for furniture, collecting things from IKEA etc but i saves (THEM!) on delivery costs. I LOVE having it there so that IF i need to get somewhere quick (vets etc) then i can.

Lorry. Horses seem to travel better in them in general and also I know of too many people who have been involved in trailer accidents, one of those being my sister, so I would never want to tow one or put my horse in one.

Trailer and Freelander

Lorries = nice and comfy and better on long journeys
trailers = cheaper to run - less diesel and no plate, insurance, MOT, service, breakdown cover etc etc

Oh and you can trailer into London for FREE!

thanks for all the feed back.
i have part share in lorry but in my previous post ive stated that its not big enough for my lad, friend uses it quite allot of dressage and i havent actually used this one at all :-/ yet paying half for everything which was the agreement.
the last lorry we had last year needed allot of work which we payed half towards but again we only used it about 5 times in the 12 months we half owned it.
so now do we buy another lorry and share or split money and opt for a trailer which would be cheaper to run and maintain but obviously got the expense of a 4x4.
My lad has no problem loading in a trailer but has always been abit unsure about loading in a lorry, seems not to like being shut in a confined space.
this is why im asking opinions so not a pointless question, just want to try and make the right decision. :-)

7.5 T LORRY cos i cant reverse a trailer (well i can but it takes hours!) usually travel 3, cant warrant driving around in a big gas guzzler 4x4. i like the living space for junk, changing, coffee. all my horses are large and like the space in the lorry. all travel well in lorry. i feel saer in a lorry than a towing outfit. it is all down to personal preference, vehicle choice3 and daily budget. i use my lorry at least 3 times a week for a variety of outings/jobs! lorry is very cheap to insure, tax is only 185 a year, and i have a lovely mechanic! (tho not had to do anything to this other than add an extra 2 mirrors!!) oh and 3 tyres!

I have a trailer, because we already had a big 4x4, and it's the cheapest way to transport my horses.
If money wasn't a problem, then I would get an equitrek super sonic lorry. I think I would find that really easy to drive and handle on my own.

My trailer is very good and suits my needs though, so I'm not complaining, but I'm still a bit rubbish at parking it.

Ifor Williams 510 and a LR Disco. Love both of them. The disco is a fabulous towing vehicle and it's impossible to drive it jerkilly as is often a problem with lorries. I prefer the less steep ramps too. I hate the lorry on our yard and horses seem to be far more content in the trailer.

I want a lorry because I think they're safer than trailers but I have an old Rice that I tow with an old Isuzu Trooper. I use the Trooper for every day driving, I would be too scared to get a lorry when I see what some of my friends have paid to plate/MOT them.

My horse appears to hate both trailers and lorries equally, though I personally think it should be easier to get on a trailer, the ramps are less steep, there's no step up (I have seen her be very worried about stepping up on to a lorry)

I have a rice b. double trailer and a VW Toureag. I hire a lorry if going long distances but mostly don't travel far. I bought the Toe rag as I loved the car and it was my main mode of transport at the time (it's now 6 years old and I only use it for towing and my car for lugging large loads around). I have an ultra efficient mini for everyday!

Like that my VW always starts. Had lorries in the past but get sick of them not starting when you want them too and my plating bill was never less than 1800 quid... just not worth it for the small distances I usually travel.

Just changed my beautiful 3.5t lorry for a 7.5t to stay road legal weight wise taking 2 heffalump horses. I pray and pray it won;t cost thousands to plate, but don't need to worry till next year about that as new one has years plate.I purchased from a dealer, and had mechanic check it over.Appreciate something will want doing at some point so am saving like mad for that eventuality as the 3.5t had only cost £250 for servicing plus another £200 for brake pads in the almost 2 years I had it. The big lorry is older than my 3.5t so its probably inevitable something will wear out at some point sadly.
I had my last trailer stolen, so don;t wish to repeat that, plus I have never mastered the art of reversing trailers well so for me a lorry was the only option.
It is also lovely to be able to sit and have a coffee or make your own bacon sarnies!

Lorry for me. When i first bought mine i was 21 and it was much cheaper to get insured on 20 year old lorry than on a 4x4 and at the time i didn't have use of a 4x4 so would have had to buy both that and trailer, so was probably looking at spending at a minimum £5k, paid much less than that for my 7.5ton lorry. I would have had to do a test whether i went for lorry or trailer as i'm on a post 97 licence. Lorry is nearly as cheap to tax as my car and in a normal year i don't spend more than £800 on getting it serviced. I couldn't afford to run a 4x4 as my main car, parents have now bought a Nissan Patrol, which is great but for the amount of mileage i do a week would probably cost me £80 in fuel easily, whereas my little clio rarely costs more than £40. On vile days it is great to have somewhere to hide/get changed/sit down at shows and i keep a LOT of my competition gear/equipment in it, makes life a lot easier than having to remember to pack the car each time. My girl travels and loads equally well in a lorry or trailer, so it was more about my preferences, although i do think a lorry gives them a better ride than a trailer.

I have a 7.5t lorry.

I started off with an Ifor Williams 505, but hitching and reversing I found very stressful.

I have a trade stand that I take around shows, so I bought a 5.5t Dodge lorry so I could sleep in it whilst away. Dave Dodge was great fun, but had no living and was VERY cold at night.

As I did more shows and found out I was lacto intollerant a lorry with a fridge (for my milk, marg and cheese) was needed, so I've got a 7.5t Leyland DAF, which is old and a bit tatty but Lawrence is my pride and joy, second only to my horse :o.

Truck, no questions. Have seen some nasty trailer accidents, often caused by other road users. Also I couldnt have a trailer pulling car as use mine for my job. So if I wanted a trailer I would have to have 2 cars.

The truck is bigger, has 2.2 tons of space for ponies, has a power hose to wash sweaty ponies, has lockers and tons of storage space. I feel like I can go further in it happily. I have slept over in it which is comfy nice (my OH was laughing the other day as it has a posh duck down duvet and pillows in it!) and it has a fridge for hobnobs and gin and tonics!!
