Depends on the occasion really. Event in the pouring rain - definitely lorry, lesson at instructor's yard - definitely trailer because the lorry doesn't fit, and there's no point driving a 5 horse lorry with one pony on board. In general I prefer a lorry but sometimes it's just no practical.
A lorry is better if you have more than 2 horses but otherwise a trailer is ok for 2. I mean you don't have to pay the up keep of another vehicle then!
Lorry does it for me. They will normaly take every thing inc bad loaders better. Just one machine to go wrong rather then two. Don't need a 4x4 and can have a little car to whiz around in. Its normaly cheaper to have a lorry and a little car rather then trailer and 4x4. After competing in a trialer and lorry I'm now looking to buy a lorry.
Having owned a trailer for 4 years then made the switch to lorry last may I can honestly say I dont know why i bothered having the trailer for 4 years. Lorry all the way.
Only negative I've found is getting stuck in soggy lorry parks. 4x4 never had any issue pulling trailer out of anything.
trailer as lorry you have to mot it and tax it. depending on how old it is normally it will cost you £1500 to £2500 to have it mot'd each year (i work at a garage!) whereas a trailer u only av the one vehicle to mot and tax rather than 2. plus they are generally a lot safer i find when travellign in bad weather. lorry blow a bit as higher up whereas trailers dont if under 50 mph. but again only my preferance. oooh one last thing if a horse gets stuck in trailer its generally better as lower to ground than lorry.

Our plating/Mot last year only cost about £150!!
If I was very rich I'd get one of those dinky, two horse lorries. But as I only use it a few times a year it would be a complete waste. Trailer is much more suitable, it just sits their, not wasting money if I don't use it.
If you get a trailer you will need a decent 4x4 to tow it with, so if you can afford to use a 4x4 all week for all your little trips then trailer is fine.
However I cant as im only 24 (expensive insurance) and live on my own with huge mortgage. I sold my beloved celica and bought a 1.2 clio and a transit box. That worked out the cheapest option for me as the combined insurance for the clio and box is less than I was actually paying on my celica. I could no way afford to do all the miles I do a week in a 4x4 so didnt have an option really.
Had trailer and lorry! Now back to trailer as I have to run a landrover anyway. Only usually travel one horse nowadays. Would probably have a lorry if I could justify it though!! Trouble is it is always a worry when it comes to plating time!
