What payload does you trailer have.?My Ifor Williams 510 is only 1584kg so while I was worrying that my car wasnt big enough it is fine and its the trailer that will limit me. I have been looking at websited for other makes but cant find anyhting with a better payload apart from IW 511 and thats only 116 kg more.

That's still going to let you carry two fairly large horses of about 750kg each, though - what do you need to carry usually?

I've got a 510 but my 16hh neddy is only just over 500kg, so I've never really thought about the trailer payload before!

I have an 17.1 full up Irish Draft and a 17.1 ISH - very long and deep. I also need to take two water containers that sit on the sides of the trailer. I am guessing each hors is about 700kg, and shouldnt we have a decent safety margin too?

If they are 700 each that still gives you a margin of about 10%, but I'd use a weigh bridge to get an accurate weight. Can the water go in the car?

Yes water csn go in the car but I have asked og about that........Gross Train Weight limits comes to mind. Agree I need to weigh horses accuratley. If I book a slot on a Saturday at local weighbridge can I unload horses and weigh trailer, then with one horse then with the other? Or walk horse onto weighbridge?

I will use a made up example

Vehicle
Kerb/empty 2100
GVW 2700
GTW 5500
towing capacity 2800
GVW+towing capaity usually = GTW
Payload 600 (2700-2100=600)

Trailer
MAM 2600
Unladen/empty 1000
Payload 1600 (2600-1000=1600)

LOAD
2 horses at 750 each = 1500
2 water containers at 50 each = 100
2 people at 90 each = 180
2 Riding gear/saddle etc at 50 each = 100
Other = 120
TOTAL to be loaded 2000

Payload total for both = 2200 (600+1600=2200) so 2000 will leave 200 spare

The empty combination = 3100 (2100+1000=3100)

Empty combination + total load = 5100 (3100+2000=5100)
GTW is 5500 so 5100 leaves 400 spare

Seems ok so far but can we use the full 5500 GTW? - no because the GVW 2700 and the MAM 2600 only totals 5300
Had the trailer been more than 2800 MAM then we would have been restricted by the 5500 GTW

Now we have to decide what we can load where ...
Putting the horses in the vehicle is likely to be a problem !
Putting the people in the trailer leaves nobody to drive the vehicle and its dangerous/illegal !

One idea
2 horses 1500 and 2 water 100 in trailer = 1600 so that is the trailer maxed out for weight
2 people 180 with riding gear 100 and other stuff 120 in vehicle = 400 leaving 200 of the possible 600 spare
Vehicle now weighs 2500 with trailer at 2600

Second idea
as first one but move 1 water to vehicle so trailer now has 1550 load out of possible 1600 and vehicle has 450 load out of possible 600
Vehicle now weighs 2550 with trailer at 2550

I hope that example helps
