Hello,

I own a Richardson Rosette supreme circa 1995 but as they are no longer trading I do not know where to go for advice. It is supposed to take 2 horses 16.3 hh but judging by the gross weight they would have to be waifes ;)

It says the trailer weight is 840kg and the gross weight is 2000kg firstly after having a new floor how can I check it is still 840kg and how would I locate someone who has the equipment to do so for me ?

And how is the gross weight calculated. From the information I can find about the more modern richardson supremes they can oly carry 1750kg so why does mine say 2000kg ? who decides how much a trailer can carry and how is it calculated?

I am concerned as my filly is over 600kg and growing ( according to the weight tape which itself I believe not to be relaibly accurate) and my mare is 565kg last time I weigh taped her for worming in feb.

So that makes me VERY close to my max weight if not over and thus I am worried as to how safe it would be to travel my two in my trailer. What would you do ? Do I take my mare and filly to the vets to be weighed in case the weight tape isnt accute ??

My car is a Land Rover Discovery so that is not a problem.

Taking it empty to a weighbridge is the only way to get the real empty weight
Same goes for when its loaded with both horses - legal to do even if over as long as you go directly to and from the loading point to the nearest weighbridge

B+E licence rules apply

The manufacturer determines the max gross weight based upon what the components are designed to do

If there is no weight plate then the total of all the tyre load ratings are taken as the max possible loaded weight so if the tyre load totals are say 2200 and plate which accidently falls off and is lost says 2000 then it becomes 2200 ..... walks away whistling .....

Wow, thank you that is really helpful.

Is it possible to get a trailer re plated for a larger weight ? Is there any way it can be inspected and certified able to carry more?

How do I find out the tyre load total? I will go out and write down the numbers on the tyres now .

ONLY the trailer manufacturer can change the plated weight - nobody else - if they gone out of business then it cannot happen

Right, been outside on me hands and knees reading what the tyres say!! Oh the joys of owning horses so glam!!

The tyres say max load 487kg.......but there are 4 of them so I hope that means they are okay for the trailer? They are Radial 884 165/80R13 83T and rated B if that means anything at all???

So therefore if I was to upgrade my tyres to stronger ones could " theoretically" my trailer carry more weight?

What are the safely issues associated with overloaded trailers ?

Many thanks again for your time and advice it is really appreciated.

487 x 4 = 1948 absolute maximum weight when loaded and none of those 4 can be exceeded so unless you can load it precisely the max I would suggest it weighs when loaded would be 1850

If it has a weight plate of 2000 then that is over-ridden by the lower tyre load ratings

I think it originally had higher load rating tyres but how much you can go to will also depend on whether other components such as the springs or axles are designed to take

Before doing anything I would take the trailer to a trailer specialist

I have found a weigh bridge locally so can check the unlaiden weight.

So are you saying the max I can carry safely is 1850 regardless of the 2000 trailer plate??

So it maybe I need to replace the tyres to make it safe to carry 2 horses.

I shall try and find a trailer specialist although they are few and far between around here.

YES because the tyres are designed to take that max weight, well 1948, but trying not to exceed one of them at any time is going to be impossible so I suggest 1850 to allow for non exact loading

Gosh it all all so complicated

Just spoke to a local ( ish ) Ifor dealer and she said the Ifors all have the 165/80R13 tyres and they can carry up to 2700kg........

How can that be ?? So jolly confusing, not helped byt eh fact they wont service or look at mine as not an Ifor :( the quest for a non IW trailer dealer who will service mine continues!!

165/80R13 ??? = what is the missing 2 numbers and 1 letter as that shows the load rating

That size of tyre can be many load ratings

165/80R13 83T but my tyres also said on them load range B

I think once I locate a local ish trailer dealer I will ask for a new set of tyres to be safe and not use the trailer until then.
