Can anyone give the best advice on how to secure (from theft) a trailer? Tow ball lock? Wheel Clamp? Which ones are best?

I have two wheel clamps on mine both on the rear wheels, behind two padlocked gates, with a doberman and a jack Russell running free. Anyone eyeing mine up would be a little bit put off by the dogs, even though they would more than likely lick them to death! :D

I've always gone with a lock inside the ball hitch (the one i have you cant see until you try and hitch up) and i also have 1 wheel clamp on it. Ideally, if you can, place it out of site of the road etc and behind locked gates it possible.

I have to admit, via friends of friends i have often been offered trailers.... which seemed too good to be true and when i have enquired further i have then been told they 'havent got them yet' - i am pretty sure they were people trying to find buyers before selling them!!!! I did get emailed photos of one which was quite a distinctive trailer, outside someones house behind a gate, with a clamp on..... obviously this wasnt going to deter someone from trying to pinch it! I obviously didnt go any further with the trailers and TBH, wanted to try and find out exactly where they were coming from so i could warn the owners !

I'd say go with every possible method to deter theives!

My one has a Bulldog hitch lock on it and also a Bulldog wheel clamp. Its kept behind locked gates too. Sadly if someone is determined to take your trailer there is not much you can do to stop them, just as many deterants as possible.

After my previous trailer was stolen I have taken every possible precaution with the replacement - so much so, that my insurance company are happy to keep insuring me. I have Bulldog hitchlock and wheel clamp and also fiitted a ground anchor into concrete in the ground. The trailer is then chained to the anchor with a thick padlocked chain that is supposed to be tamper-proof. This stuff came from a motorbike security company. Finally I bought from Farmkey (people that freezemark horses) a pack with adhesive letters that are stuck onto the trailer and a warning sign that the trailer is security marked. So far so good but I think if they are really determined to steal the trailer they will - I'm just trying to make it so difficult and time consuming that they look for an easier option!

When the last batch of trailers were stolen in our area, lots had hitchlocks and wheelclamps and they just put chains round the A-Frames and drag them away, hence I have no faith in these methods alone.

Good Luck!

When the old livery yard was done only two trailers left, a brand new and distinctive trailer not often seen around and my mums because its 'old' and has green algae on it. The thieves had brought an angle grinder to get through chain on gate and peoples wheel clamps. They are down a private road in view of houses. But I have heard good things about the hitch point ones as mentioned above.

Or just have an 'old', dirty trailer. :D

Our IW was stolen a few years back. It was in a brick barn which had two heafty metal doors on it. The trailer has chained at the rear with a chain recommended by police which you need oxycetaline cutters for and padlock too to the metal roof beams in barn. also one of those in ground posts at front. barn doors locked with hefty padlock and barn was in a paddock with 6ft mains electirc fence and double gates on locked too. just goes to show if they want it they will have it. Hitchlocks dont deter them round here they use scaffold poles under the front and drag them away.
