Fairly new trailer owner here, brought last year and previously serviced so now its my turn to get it serviced but I'm just keen to know what they are supposed to do and how much i should expect? (cost from three companies is around the £100 mark so not too fussed on price)

Also, whilst I'm here ..... what treatment do people use ont heir trailer wooden floors and do you just treat the top or do you take the boards out and coat them all round? Thanks

OH is a mechanic and without checking with him, I know that as well as things like checking basic things such as lights, electrics, greasing up points, he takes the wheels off so as to get to the brakes to fully check them. I am sure there is other stuff but without asking not sure. That is around the price of the service at his place as well though of course if then brakes do need replacing goes up. He would also check the tyres for tread, cuts, etc as it is not easy to see the inside edge of tyres yourself from a visual inspection. It would be around two hours work for the basic service so quite comprehensive.

Choose one that's National Towing and Trailer Association accredited and they'll give you a checklist. They should tick each check they do off the list and note whether any work has been done on that particular thing. Mine will also leave any parts he's removed for me to inspect and to prove he's changed them - and will phone me for permission before changing anything. His website sets out everything he does for a service. It's easier than me typing it all up! http://www.harvestchoice.co.uk/trailer-servicing.html

I don't think you're a million miles from Banbury, Ant? I can recommend Barry at http://thehorseboxhandyman.co.uk/. He's never actually serviced a trailer for me (I'm too far away) but he's a friend of my OH and has helped him loads with rebuilding his old Range Rover (OH's from Banbury. His parents are still there so he goes for the weekend for Barry to help him play with his car). He's very knowledgeable and thorough.

Mine gives the whole trailer a thorough going over - checks floor and wall panels, ramps and doors, brakes, tyres, electrics and probably loads of other stuff I've forgotten. He checks before replacing anything (replaced part of the brakes and some tyres on mine last year) and kept the old parts to show me.
I think the cost is around £90 and it is well worth it to me to know the horses are as safe as possible.

Pretty much as above... Safety check of all parts including taking the wheels off to check the parts of the brakes, greases everything up and does the tyre pressures for me. Replaces anything needed at extra cost. Needed a wheel bearing last time which I wouldn't have had a clue about so well worth it for me.
