Wondered who people would recommend in this area?

Last year I just got my local mechanic to check the brakes etc and trailer is running fine.

I had phoned one of the dealers and was quoted an extortionate amount and told that they'd need my trailer for about 2 weeks to do the service - keen to avoid this so looking for other peoples suggestions?

Also - how many of you actually service your trailer annually?

Thanks

I had our local mechanic do work on mine last year, think had new break pads etc, cant remember but had it all checked to do my trailer test.

I also phoned our local dealer and got quoted a huge price, my mechanic did on site and ordered parts myself through IW dealer .

I try to have mine checked every year, it dosent do a huge amount as have lorry as well but im paranoid thats its safe. Phone local garages and ask for some prices.

Am interested in this thread as I am just about to get mine done - and was going to ring local agents. What do you call an extortionate price? And what do they actually DO for the price? Have no idea what to expect, but do know that it needs a few IW parts and not sure if local garage would be able to get them or not.

Mine is fairly old, and we are half an hour south of edinburgh on A1. Would be grateful for ideas too!!

Afraid I don't know anyone in your area. I've taken mine to the IW dealer in East Lothian for services (roughly once every 18 months) and it's been about £90. Never needed any work done. It's always been done the same day though, so I'd be wondering why on earth they'd need it for 2 weeks unless it needed LOADS done?!

It's the East Linton one I've always taken mine to, but they've another 2 branches so might be another one closer to you. :)

Ponio fine thanks, on the last couple of weeks of boxrest at last so roll on getting back to the field. She seems a little miserable. :( But is being very well behaved (with just a bit more grumping than normal, but that's understandable!). Hope your lot are well and look forward to seeing B out pinging this season. :D

Thanks guys - If I remember correctly the place I contacted were quoting £180 + vat and that was for a basic service!

Will maybe try my mechanic and see what he can do!

Thanks - have phoned them and booked in for Wednesday - will get back Thurs unless something big needs to be done!!!

B entered for K'muir!:) Glad pony OK. Will be in touch..

Glad you've just said this! Just popped my recently purchased trailer into Rutherfords (their Swinton branch only a few miles from home) as wanted it to have a going over before putting any horses in it. They said that it only takes a few hours to go through things. Always used Rutherfords for my cars so figured that they would be a good bet for a trailer too!

Well I emailed Mckenzies nr Stirling and they have quoted £40 per hour plus vat for labour, they require 4 hours for servicing and then on top of that the price of any materials.

Oh and you need to book 6 weeks in advance - I'll definitely be looking elsewhere!

Just a shame that place in East Linton is so far away although if I can't find anyone else I might just end up going there!

defo worth phoning round as the ifor dealer near was doing free servicing in either feb or march last year. All i had to pay was the parts they used.

Mt mechanic does mines and its about 60 quid tops he has it for a day but doesnt work on it for the full day then I pick it up.

Never had a btoerh with it so far but this year i think I have a short in the leccy cable head so saving up to send it to him as that will need sorted.

I dont see why a dealer needs to charge so much when a mechanic doing the same charges less. Mines jacks it up and checks underneath for me no bother.

I use John Gibson, he is just up the road from me in Skirling - near Biggar. didn't charge very much for a service although I can't remember exactly, but I think it was about £80

his number is 07872928925

would recommend, and I know he does alot of the trailers round here, IW and equi trek

Not much help to you Babybear, but my Dad does mine. He's a mechanic in Aberdeen. Only thing I'd say is that don't underestimate how long some things might take. It depends of course on what needs done, but sometimes it takes almost as long to thorougly check things as it does to repair them!

If you do take it to a mechanic that isn't "horsey", be clear on whether they are doing things like checking ramp springs/catches/trailer floor, as they might only do the "running" parts such as brakes/lights, rather than check the safety of it? At least I know Dad does everything!

I took mine to a fantastic guy just outside Kirkintilloch. Was very honest, not a rip off merchant at all! My trailer's quite old and he did his very best to get new parts for it and fit them for the weekend.

Are you sure about the 6 weeks booking in time? I have liveries who use Mckenzies and they don't wait anything like that and have only good things to say about them.

Thats what they said in the email they sent back and it was the same last year when I emailed them.

kirsty17 - do you have the details of the guy you use as I'm pretty close to Kirkintilloch!

I know this is an old thread!

Can anyone tell me where is best to get my Ifor Williams serviced without it costing an arm and a leg. I am near Stirling.

Any names or contact numbers would be greatly appreciated. Thank you
