My parents bought a Ifor williams 505 trailer a couple years ago (for my mums 15.2hh) and since then I have bought a 16.2hh TB. She is a big horse with high head carriage and I am a bit concerned about the trailer being too small for her. As she is a youngster I am not sure of whether we should be looking at a bigger one. Does anyone have any experience of how good these are for bigger horses or recommend an alternative?? Thanks

510 - Gives them more room in all directions.

I have a 505 and My 16.1 id/tb is fine travelling in there.........it is a little tight and ideally we would like the 510 but we wouldn't be comfortable towing the 510 with my mums car.
My girl is 6 and quite happily goes in the trailer.never had any problems with and the travels quite happily!

I would go for the next size up being a 510. Have to be honest though I much prefer the Richardsons to the Ifors (my opinion) and if you were looking at these you should be looking at an Exel or Advance which would be similar size to 510.

I put my 16.2hh Dutch warmblood in a IW 505 and he has plenty of room.

The IW 510 is not that much bigger and if you are only travelling one horse the IW 505 should be okay.

I put a poll guard on my horse when travelling, but not because he bangs his head when travelling but because he use to run out when we arrived at a show and hit his head on the steel frame at the back when coming out!

I've had both & love the Richardsons. I think the craftmanship is much better, a smarter finish, the cut away roof over front ramp is so much better (horse not wacking its head on exit), and most important thing, if you break down in an Ifor & have to get your horse out of trailer, it opens into the road so it obviously caters more for Europe. The Richardson ramp doesn't open into the road so in my opinion much safer. I have the Supreme advance and love it. There's so much head room, it seems very wide & very high & very light & airy. Have a look on the richardson website if you're interested. As to whether it tows any better I think that's probably a lot to do with what you're towing with & I tow with a discovery.

After having a 510 I would now never travel anything over 15hh in anything smaller. It gives a far more comfortable journey and off loading on the side ramp is far easier!

Ifor Williams say that the 505 is large enough to carry 2 x 16h2" horses. If you have a worry about how your horse csarries it's head then put a poll Guard on it & it shoiuld be fine. It seems a little extreme to go for the 510 when the maker say it is the right size for your animal.

If you are considering another trailer give soime thought to The Basteson, either Ascot or Deauville model, they carry up to 17h with ease.
