I passed my driving test three months ago and i need to pass my trailer test but i'm concerned that i dont have enough driving experiance to be able to pull the trailer and horse.I am still making silly mistakes when driving and i would hate the thought of putting my boy off travelling by my inexperiance. He loads and travels perfectly and i would hate to give him a bad time of it!.I have always relied on my hubby to do the towing but he is now working stoopid times and days (he is away from home 6 days out of seven every week) At this present time my hubby is sat on the port of Barcelona supping beers (git)..I feel i am missing out on lots of fun and shows because i cannot get anywhere.Am i rushing things?.Any advice or slaps gladly welcome.

I would just say get as much practise driving as possible, the more you do the better you'll become, and prehaps practise doing challenging things like tackling bendy roads, sharp turns (especially to the left), lots of parrallel and reverse parking, reversing round corners etc, just things to improve your accuracy whenever you can and then practise driving the trailer lots until you feel confident when it is empty before putting your horse in it.

i heard that you have had to passed your test a year before you could take your driving test.. is this true? (i hope not!!!)

I passed my test in 1999 and have only just taken my trailer test. I started towing last year but didnt feel that I was ready to do so till then.
Personally I would get more driving experience before you start to learn to tow. Its a lot different, you need to be more aware of things going on around.
Do you feel ready to start towing? I think thats the main thing youve got to ask yourself. I know you may feel that youre missing out on things by not being able to get to shows and things but youre best not rushing it, theres always next season.

Thanks for your reply. To be honest no i dont feel ready yet to start towing and i have had my fill of lessons and tests for this year lol.You are probably right i should wait another year maybe.

I have just looked on the DSA and goverment websites and cannot see where it says you have to wait a year but that dosent mean it isent true just means i cannot find it lol,.

Rema, im glad youve been honest as there are so many people that seem to want to rush into towing and when you think what you end up with inside it, it can be so worrying if something happens. Wait till youve got shut of the boy racer inside you then learn to tow!

I didnt have many lessons (2) and the test was more than enough for me, and so expensive too!

ive had a look and cant find anything about either, but it would make sense but then again the DVLA make things up as they go along (much to my annoyance re my trailer test and driving license

I passed my test in March 1997, so just missed the deadline for having to do this new test! Have just booked my trailer test and its £89. Apparently most people fail on just the normal road driving part of the test as they've got out of all the good habits needed for passing a test. As you've recently done your test you may be in a better position than most as you should still be driving 'like a learner' and not picked up any really bad habits as yet. So if I were you I'd have a few trailer training sessions (-beware expensive £45 per hour around here!) and then go and do your test, then when you've passed it you can practise driving with the trailer empty until you feel confident enough to put your horse in?
I know that I'm most nervous about the road test part of the test as I have picked up soooo many bad habits!

I heard loads of bad things about the trailer test but it wasnt that bad. All that I was told wasnt true and I ended up having the chief examiner testing me. He told me to drive like I normally did and to relax. He kept asking me throughout my drive "would you have done that if you werent sitting the test" or course my answer was yes and to stop trying to trick me with his questions - he just laughed and said he wouldntve done and he wouldnt put me any minors on for that because it is basic driving eg.you dont always use your handbrake at a roundabout like you were taught to.
Ive been driving 9 years in total and the bad habits I picked up didnt make any difference in my test.
The chief examiner told me that as long as I had full control of my vehicle and trailer that I could do what I wanted with my hands eg cross them over etc.

Personally I wouldnt get yourselves worked up about the test. Only thing im going to do its get myself worked up over the fact that the DVLA may make me resit mine!
