Trailer test question??

I know i have to take the trailer test to tow where the combined weight of the car and trailer is over 3500kg but what about if its under?
I've always assumed i would have to take the test regardless but i've just read this:

Now the combined weight of my horse, trailer, car and contents is just under 3500kg's so can someone please clarify what i would have to do?
I usually tow with someone who has passed before 1997 in the car and L plates but i wonder if this is unnessesary now?
Only im desperate to take out my horse tomorrow and will only have someone who has passed after 1997 following me-will this be OK?

If the maximum weight of the car and trailer is under the 3500kgs then you can tow BUT its the maximum that the trailer and car can weigh. For example my trailers weighs 600kg and my pony is 450kg, so only 1050kgs, BUT my trailer has a maximum (gross?) weight of 1800kgs, so its irrelevent how much my horse weighs, as 1800kg pushes my trailer and car (1800kg as well I think) over the 3500kg limit. Im pretty sure we tried to get in under this but found that once a horse is in, it basically puts everyone over.

So I think you can possibly tow a trailer legally WITHOUT a horse, but put one in and you need the test. I believe...!

No, you either need someone who is legally able to tow in the vehicle with you (and L plates), or someone else should take you. As Chex said, it is the potential weight, rather than the actual weight that it is judged on. Having said that, Troggy did occasionally take the risk before she took her test.
