I was just wondering about the trailer test.

How much training/previous practice did you have? Over what period of time? How much does the test and training cost? Is it easy to do the training and take the test in a short space of time?

Sorry for a billion questions!

The more info the better :D

Thankies x

Hiya,

I did a three day intensive course followed by a test on the final day, it was literally 6 hrs a day earning manovers and general driving. As much as I hate the cost etc that comes with a trailer test the training became invaluble when I was actually out towing the horses myself. It cost for me and my husband just under £800 for the whole thing.

I was more annoyed going to camp, parking out the way tidily and then being blocked in by two trailers who didnt "need" a trailer test.

If you do go for it yourself dont stress about it, slow and steady is safest and good luck x

Forgot to add, I had no trailering experience prior to doing the course and passing my test :)

I did the two day intensive course which is 8 hours a day solid driving. Think it cost me about £780 including the test but the training was totally worth it, i had no towing experience beforehand. What killed me was that I failed the test twice on silly things and passed third time so had an extra £300 worth of test fees on top of the initial cost. It's worth the money, I really enjoy towing!

It seems a lot of money! Just seems the ideal time to do it though - have got some money spare. It just means I won't have any money to fall back on and will have to build my savings up again. But since I'm moving into a new job in march it will only be a couple of months that I'll be short on money for. I'm going to email about it tonight so I don't lose the bottle to go through with it. I'm scared of being rubbish

I passed mine last may!!
I went somewhere quiet with my dad to practice the reversing, then booked in for an hour assessment, I then was told I would only need a day training with the test at the end! £300 in total and I passed first time!!
The training started at 9am hours lunch then the test was at 2.30!!

Near me its about £650 all inclusive for 3 half days with test on day 3

The B+E test
No medical or theory test required
Read a number plate from a certain distance
VIDEO - Show Me Tell Me Questions - usually 5
The next three can be in any order:-
VIDEO - Reversing Exercise - done in test centre grounds if test conducted from practical test centre - some tests are now being done from training school grounds
VIDEO - Uncouple/couple up - done in test centre grounds if test conducted from practical test centre - some tests are now being done from training school grounds
One hour road drive - includes the independent drive and is done virtually the same as the basic car test

DISCLAIMER - I have no connection to any companies which may be featured in those videos

This is interesting BUT NOT RECOMMENDED – a B licence towing set up can be presented for the B+E test but L plates must be used for the test. So you can train yourself, go to test by yourself, fit L plates, do the test, then, pass or fail, remove L plates and drive away by yourself.
DSA B+E TEST AND VEHICLE/TRAILER REQUIREMENTS

SUPERVISING A B+E LEARNER
In April 2010 new rules were introduced for those supervising certain learner drivers but they only affected those supervising VOCATIONAL categories such as C1 C1+E D1 & D1+E where the supervising driver had those categories given to them for free when they passed a pre 1997 car test.
They do not affect those with a pre 1997 B+E licence who wish to supervise a B+E learner.
All B licence holders have B+E provisional on the paper part of their licence and can tow an empty or loaded trailer on all roads including motorways.
The usual rules apply when a learner is driving -
The supervising driver must be aged over 21
The supervising driver must have held a B+E licence for at least 3 years
L plates must be fitted to the front of the vehicle and the rear of the trailer
Correct insurance for a B+E learner

Mine was 3 full days with the test at the end of the 3rd day. Cost £600. The days consisted of learning the manouvers and then driving round the centre of Bristol and Taunton. My examiner was particularly miserable, condescending, patronising and generally very rude!!! But I passed any how! Wouldn't have wanted to go through it a second time if I failed haha! The company I used provided the 4x4 and trailer. Not all company's do this and you require you own 4x4.

I did four days so nearer £800 for me plus the test fee of £100 and something. But I had never done any towing and didn't practise outside my lessons and I am not a good natural driver. I did five hours a day for four days and then took my test on day five :) Company provided everything.

Easy peasy lemon squeezy and I agree, I feel much more confident knowing I have been passed fit to tow. And I can reverse which is more than a lot of people who tow with 'granny rights' it would seem!

Hi, I just passed my trailer test before Xmas. I had no previous experience pulling a trailer. I had a 3hr lesson on the Friday and 2 hrs on the Monday morning followed by the test. It cost me £110 for test and £200 for lessons and hire of car for test etc. The instructor took me through all the show me, tell me questions, trailer and car maintenance, coupling the trailer etc. Passed 1st time, I was nervous about the reversing but instructor was fab in making it simple to understand and get my head round.

I emailed two companies. Wooohooo . . .am making progress, have been wanting to do it for years. One company looks like it's going to cost nearer £1000 which seems really high, and that's just for two days training and the test. It charges for the training and use of vehicles separately. The other company for 16hours and the test is looking to be about £700. Will definitely be on a tight budget for a few months after this.

Thanks for your replies.
