Trailer test

Hi

I passed my driving test in 1997 so thought I would have to do the trailer test to tow.

I have a bateson deauville trailer with the following weight:

Trailer weight and capacity (Kg)
Gross weight Unladen weight Capacity
2300 860 1440

My 4x4 is a Nissan X-trail which tows 2 tonne.

My horse weighs 600kg.

I was looking at a towing training web site which says I am currently limited to:
a vehicle and trailer combination up to 3.5 tonnes MAM providing the MAM of the trailer doesn't exceed the unladen mass of the towing vehicle.

Can I tow this horse without the B+E test?

Assuming your Xtrail has a GVW of 2170 kgs as stated on the weight plate under the bonnet or hidden in a door frame then you can have a trailer with a plated MAM of 1330

To get a trailer with a MAM of say 1300 will mean contacting the manufacturer of that trailer to get it down plated for little or no cost

To get a trailer with a MAM of 1300 to take a 600 kg horse means the empty trailer will need to be no more than 700 kgs

there are trailers on the market which weigh 675 kgs empty such as the Bateson Derby

You have the right vehicle for B licence towing but need the right trailer


The one extra rule for towing a trailer over 750 kgs MAM on a B only licence is this....
.... the vehicle GVW added to the trailer plated MAM must not total more than 3500 kgs


This bit .... the MAM of the trailer doesn't exceed the unladen mass of the towing vehicle ..... was revoked on 19/01/2013

Hi, I have spent hours reading about this and am still uncertain. I would be really greatful for any help.
I am currently on a B licence and know that at some point I will do the B +E but would love to be able to tow on the B licence if possible. Is there any chance with the following combination, and if so what would the trailer need to be downgraded to?
Towing vehicle. Toyota Hilux Double Cab 2.5l pick up with an open back
Trailer . ifor williams hb505 built in 2004
Welsh A pony - under 350kg?

Thank you - was optimistically hoping that they wouldn't use the maximum gross vehicle weight of an unladen pick up! The other vehicle option that I have which I hadn't considered before would be to tow it with a year2011, 2.0litre ford s-max. I have had a look and think there is more chance but would really appreciate your guidance. It would still be towing a 2004 ifor hb 505 with a 350kg max pony?
