Trailer ties... anyone use one?

Just wondering if anyone uses one. (something similar to this: http://www.olddairysaddlery.co.uk/j...2750914.html?gclid=CN6Du4eUpr4CFa3LtAodQyUAvw)

I wouldnt use a bungie one, but I was thinking it would be very handy to have in my trailer, rather than faffing around with the lead rope attached to my head collar.

However, I'm guessing it should still be attached to a piece of string, or equiping type devise, not the metal tie up ring, otherwise I cant see how it would be safe,

And which end attaches to the horse, the trigger clip of panic thingy. (I hate those panic clips find them hard to operate!)

And then on the other hand I suppose a lead rope already in the trailer would do the same job. However no matter how well I think I've tied my rope up, they always come undone!
 
The owners of my share horses have them in their trailer. Attached to string, as you say, she has the panic clip at the horse end, because it's lower down and therefore easier to get to quickly, without reaching round horse and haynet, but I don't know if this is the correct way. I can see how they are supposed to work, and it does save the bit where you try to adjust the rope and get a face full of haynet, and it is nice to know that if anything happens you just grab the clippy bit and pull without having to fiddle. However, the panic clip is fiddly to clip on, and I'm always worried that it's going to ping and hit the horse when I undo it, so I always undo it with my hand cupped around it. Our two are very good to load and very quiet in the trailer, but I'm not sure I'd like to try to get it clipped onto one that was a bit agitated or fussy.

I'd rather have a lead rope already tied up in the trailer, personally, but it's not my horse and not my trailer, and I'm very lucky to be allowed to go competing with them at all, so I can't really quibble!
 
I used them the other way round when I had a trailer. Its far easier and safer that way. I can confirm they work after having a horse down in the trailer a few years ago. Its easier to unclip at the top than trying to unclip at a panicking horses head. It was attached to string but it didn't break. All was well in the end I'm pleased to say.
 
I have been debating if to see if I could get one made up with trigger clips on both ends. Perhaps might be better for me than one of those panic clips as I hate them with a passion!

Oooh, I would just suggest you imagine what would happen if the string were to break when the bungee were pulled tight.

I imagine a metal clip wanging its way at great speed towards my horse's face.
 
Yes, I have used these for many years. The "panic" end should be at the horse's head as otherwise it may swing back and hit the horse when released; I find them quite simple and quick to clip on and of course they are designed to release instantly when required. They are also excellent if a horse is down or pulling back as an ordinary trigger clip will not release when there is pressure on the rope. Don't use twine at the ring as this just teaches horses to pull back.

Personally I always use one (not an elastic one though) and have used the panic end on the odd occasion. Would definately always have the panic end attached to the string, it can be bloody dangerous trying to get your hand under their chin to undo it especially if they've got stuck over the breast bar or something. In that situation, I just want to release the horse as quickly and safely as possible, I think the risk of hitting the horse with the end of the clip is the least of the problems ;)

I would also always use twine! It doesn't teach a horse to pull back? I've never had a horse learn to break the string in the trailer or when tied up anywhere. Very dangerous not to...
 
I use a similar tie to Lotty , it is an equiping I think. They are designed to come undone under pressure. Then we leave lead ropes tied to them and just clip them on .
 
I use the bungy tie with panic clip at the top end in the theory that if needed to release the animal quickly you a) can stay as far away from the animal as possible and b) you have something at least to hold onto once they are loose before you can attach a rope. Don't like the equiping thing, they give up far too easily!
 
I agree with always using string, I find it really hard not to tie to string, though I do have a pony who has learnt that he can snap the string if he really wants to, but still always use it :D
 
I have the bungee one and attach the panic clip to the horse. I only use it on the outside of the lorry now as I found my tie rings too high and the bungee too short so she couldn't reach her hay.
