Trailer towing and maximum weights

My 4x4 has a maximum braked towing weight of 3.5T, so does this mean I can tow an Equitrailer at say 1125kg unladen, 2 x TB @ 1000kg, and still have 1325kg left in the trailer to play with (tack, hay etc)?

Or do I have to take into account the weight of the car also? So if my max towing weight is 3500kg, less the car at 2175kg, less two horses at 1000kg, say 300kg tack, hay etc = 25kg left for the actual trailer (that cant be right, can it???)....maybe this is why people only tow with one horse?
 
The weight of the car has nothing to do with it. Just count the trailer, horses and kit that will be carried by the trailer alone
 
Hi. ROG will correct if I am wrong, but my understanding is you take the towing capacity ( look in manual) of your car in kg, take away the unladen weight of your trailer and what you have left is the payload you have for everything else. My 4 x 4 has towing capacity of 2000kg, my trailer weighs 1000kg, so I have a payload of 1000kg for my horse tack water etc.
 
If you have a B+E licence, the weight of the car does not come into it, the 3.5t is the limit for what is behind the car, so the trailer, horses and whatever else you want to carry in the TRAILER. Passengers and other stuff in the car don't matter, well, they do, but not for towing capacity.

The towing capacity is to do with what is being towed .... nothing to do with the vehicle

If the trailer has a plated MAM of 3500 and your max towing capacity is also 3500 and the trailer when empty is 1125 then you can load a max of 2375 into the trailer (3500-1125=2375)

The Vehicle will have a listed GVW and when its loaded must not exceed that weight


MAM and GVW have the same meaning = the max weight it can be when fully loaded

GTW is the maximum ACTUAL weight both vehicle and trailer can be when weighed together on a weighbridge
GTW minus GVW usually = towing capacity
