Trailer Towing insurance

Hi, after reading a post about learner drivers towing, I was just wondering if any of you have a specific trailer towing insurance? and what it covers.

when I checked with my insurance company they said that because I drive a 4x4 and it is a policy by a 4x4 company then I would be automatically insured if towing anything.
 
We just took out extra insurance for theft / damage and roadside recovery, but with a specialist company, nothing to do with the car insurance
 
As far as I am aware you don't need separate insurance, I have my car insured (just normal car insurance), then separate trailer insurance for damage etc should there be an accident, then horse covered under separate policy again!

Am hoping this covers all bases

you don't need separate insurance to tow from a third party liability persective (ie if you hit someone else, but if you hit a tree and write the trailer off you would need to have a separate policy to cover that, but that is the same one that you need for theft etc when it is parked up.

As an aside your insurance may cover you but your recovery may only cover the trailer and refuse to have anything to do with the horses - specialist policy is a must (equine rescue do a good one)
 
I was told by my previous insurance company that i needed specific trailer insurance for towing, they would cover me for towing the trailer with nothing in (duh) but not if my horse was in it !

I changed to NFU who insure my 4 x 4 and my trailer, I have seperate recovery through PRP who are linked with RAC, I think RAC do their own scheme also but that happened after I'd arranged the other and couldn't be bothered to mess around.

My understanding is that you are not covered on normal insurance. So if I were you Diamond, I'd double check with your insurance, that you are able to tow livestock or just a trailer
 
Eeek, thanks Noisygirl - will have to double check this now.

I've never heard of anyone having to get special insurance to tow ponies before, my mum certainly never did when she was trundling me round pony club all those years ago!
 
I am able to tow on my original cover , BUT my trailer has to be insured seperately against damage etc.

Check the terms and conditions of your car policy - some say you are only insured if you own the trailer or have it under a hire agreement, some you must tell the company that you will be towing etc.
 
Check your policy!

I was going to insured on the 4X4 to learn to drive a trailer, with L-plates. All set up and not costing a huge amount to add me until we double checked and they wouldn't insure a learner driver, which I classed as with a trailer

I have a company car so it's slightly different as I needed to get written permission from the lease company to be able to tow, but it doesn't change the insurance. The company's insurance policy covers me all of the time in the car, and I have my own breakdown and recovery policy for when I'm towing which covers the trailer, recovery of the horse/transport to wherever, and the car (though the company AA cover through lease co would cover the car anyway).
