Do I need to sit a test to pull this below?? Totally confused and have been on hold for 30min to the DVLA.

I passed my test in 2000 and have a ordinary car driving licence.

Ifor William 510 with a 600kg horse in it and tow with a Nissan xtrail 2.2 diesel.

At the moment my partner tows me everywhere, but I think I would like to do be able to do this myself in the future and want to make sure I am legal.

Thanks

Yep, fairly sure you will need to sit your trailer test and have a B&E licence to tow that combination.

Licences held from 1 January 1997

If you passed your driving test after 1 January 1997 and have an ordinary category B (car) licence, you can:
drive a vehicle up to 3.5 tonnes or 3,500kg MAM towing a trailer of up to 750kg MAM
tow a trailer over 750kg MAM as long as the combined weight of the trailer and towing vehicle is no more than 3,500kg

But as I am here ....

which one is your model in this list? - http://carleasingmadesimple.com/business-car-leasing/nissan/x-trail/gross-vehicle-weight/

Lets say yours has a GVW of 2100 to make things easy

HB510 - http://www.towinghorsetrailers.co.uk/trailer/1064 - has a MAM of 2584 and is 1000 empty

2100+2584=4684 which is well above the 3500 limit for b licence towing

The max trailer MAM for a vehicle with a GVW of 2100 is 1400 so no good for you to down plate it to 1400 as that would only leave 400 for the horse

You have a great vehicle for B licence towing but the wrong trailer so get either a B+E licence or find a very lightweight trailer such as a new/second hand Bateson Derby which is 675 empty and can be down plated by the manufacturer from 1700 to 1400 leaving 725 for the horse/trailer load

SUPERVISING A B+E LEARNER
In April 2010 new rules were introduced for those supervising certain learner drivers but they only affected those supervising VOCATIONAL categories such as C1 C1+E D1 & D1+E where the supervising driver had those categories given to them for free when they passed a pre 1997 car test.
They do not affect those with a pre 1997 B+E licence who wish to supervise a B+E learner.
All B licence holders have B+E provisional on the paper part of their licence and can tow an empty or loaded trailer on all roads including motorways.
The usual rules apply when a learner is driving -
The supervising driver must be aged over 21
The supervising driver must have held a B+E licence for at least 3 years
L plates must be fitted to the front of the vehicle and the rear of the trailer
Correct insurance for a B+E learner
