Trailer Tyres Help?

I am looking to get some new tyres for my horse trailer as the current ones are perished and not useable.

Its a Bateson 2 horse trailer and currently has old style 175/86 tyres fitted. Would it be ok to use 165/80/13 tyres? Would these be sufficient to hold the weight?

Any info would be great as we need the trailer up and running asap

I think they have to have some sort of special reinforcement in the side walls or something. I know you can't use simple straightforward car tyres on trailers because of the weight you end up carrying.

Best thing is to talk to your local tyre dealers and they should be able to put you straight.
 
When I needed some info on my Bateson, I rang Bateson to see what they suggested, then went to the local independent tyre place.
 
You have to be careful what tyres you put on a trailer, you shouldn't use normal car tyres as they cannot take the weight the trailer & load will amount to. Contact your local tyre fitting place & they will be able to advise you. You may find that van tyres will have a similar spec & can be used.

I spoke to Bateson and they informed me i can use 165/80/13, 175/80/13 and 185/60/13.

Im swaying more towards 165/80/13 as they are cheaper and the trailer only gets used once a year at the most!
 
I work for our family tyre business and I have just spoken to my Dad (who has 40+ years experience in the trade).

He agrees that you are ok to put 165/80r13 on but make sure they are van tyres and this will have a 'C' on the side wall of the tyre, just after the R13. You need to make sure that they can carry the weight otherwise they are car tyres.
 
Ok, thanks for the help! I got a few quotes for the tyres and ive made sure i asked for van specific tyres £120 for 4 budget tyres fitted and balanced.
 
I know it is painful to put expensive tyres on a trailer, especially when you use it so rarely, but it only takes that one journey where the tyre blows, for you to have a horrible accident. You really do need to buy the real deal for trailers. I had the same thing, my old Rice had 4 knackered tyres and I had to replace them all in one hit.
 
Just had to replace all the tyres on my Bateson, again due to perish damage, , ,they put van tyres on make sure they are 8ply so they can cope with the weight, mine cost £160 that was the cheepest I could get a quote for ATS tyres,
 
I have just checked our suppliers and that is a really good price. Just check if it includes VAT. In fact, get them to provide a breakdown of the cost for you. Also, ask what pattern it is.
 
Just rang to confirm and they arent 'C' rated but they say they would be ok for a trailer (think i'll steer clear of them) can anyone recommend any companies?
 
I don't know anyone down there - all us independants stick together and help each other out where we can.

Shop around and drop me a message and I will have a look at our prices to see if you are getting a good deal.
 
Try popping into the garage that you sent your car/lorry to, and see who they recomend for tyres. I know around here, each garage tends to specialise - one in tyres and servicing, one in MOT's etc, and they send work to each other.
 
The other thing to think about is do you have a spare wheel?

If so, and its in good nick, you could use the tyre from that meaning you would only have to buy 3 tyres then use the best one of the ones you remove and put it onto your spare. Hope that makes sense.
 
Im going to pop to a few garages after work i think. Ive found the tyres i need online but it doesnt include fitting which is a pain!
 
Its all well and good buying them online what do you do if you have a problem?

Getting them fitted will cost you too whereas garages will fit them free when you buy from them.

The overall cost could be more expensive as some places (not us I hasten to add) can charge a fair whack just for having them fitted.
