Sooooo, I've looked into trailers extensively (U may have seen my previous post!), but kinda thinkin of lorries now, if i get one under 3.5 tonne then I can drive it, whereas horse trailer I can't!!
I've got a v max of 4k, which I know won't get a brand new lorry, but does anyone have a preference to which they prefer?
Any thoughts?

What are you planning in travelling? i.e. horse build and height and what are you going to tow with? Personally I would never tow anything over a tb 15.2hh - but that is just me. I am a coward as when i was ten we had a crash in our trailer. And I am very cautious of the 3.5 tonne vehicles as you can soo easy go over weight and if you have a heavy 17 hh will you get the weight and the height needed?

I have a 3.5t lorry, it is an older lt35 which you can pick up for about the money you have. It will carry up to 16h as long as they are compact! I do high mileage in my car so it is more ecconmical for me to run the lorry and a small car than to drive a towing vehicle on a daily basis. Tbh I think you will struggle to get a decent towing vehicle and trailer for your budget.

You have to be very wary of old converted 3.5 ton lorry/vans as with many the quality of the build can be suspect. Ever since the change in the driving licence laws old vans that were worth very little & actually scrappers have managed to gain a new lease of life as a 3.5 ton lorry/van. A lorry/van build is only as good as the donor vehicle & if that was of poor quality then the build will be suspect. I appreciate that £4000 is your budget but it may be worth waiting & saving a little longer & buying something a little newer that will last & not end up costing you a fortune in repairs etc. Good Luck in your search.

The cost of many 4x4s is quite low now & if you spent £2k on the vehicle & £2k on a trailer you could have a reasonable combination. In fact I think you'd probably have a better deal than on a 3.5 ton for same money...........but you'd need to pass the test

We've already got a 4x4, just need the trailer! I think a trailer would be easier but I've been told the test is quite difficult and not many people pass first time (its quite expensive around here to!) but not sure how true that is!! I suppose if I worked out the overall cost of lorry what with plating etc it would work out the same as getting trailer lessons!

Until I pass I have to rely on father! lol!!

Pretty much just answered my own question! lol! Thanks guys

Tests have a purpose! You'll be safer and better for taking one whether for a lorry or a trailer. I had a towing lesson and picked up lots of tips and gained confidence - money well spent.

Good luck its good to have your independence from Dad!

And of course we have to pay for everything too.

Unfortunately father doesn't pay for anything equine wise!! lol!!

I'd always go for a lorry and TBH I wouldn't let any of my ponies go in a trailer anymore - I've seen so many accidents with trailers overturning, becoming unstable etc. Plus IMHO surely the horse will feel much safer enclosed in a box rather than being so close to the road and traffic with the top doors usually open.
I just don't like trailers.
