Our Bateson Ascot trailer got new tyres a couple of weeks ago, came to use it last weekend and all four wheels are totally siezed and not moving at all. We've had the odd wheel do this (even though we never put the brake on) but have always managed to free it by moving back and forth or banging the brake cables underneath or kicking the wheel nuts. However this time we had to give up! Ive got a friend coming over this Friday to try and help get the wheels freed in time for an event on Saturday. But what else can we try?? Its like the brake is stuck on somehow, I pull the brake on and then release it but it perhaps isnt releasing fully it looks like (but hard to tell - can see the cable moving when releasing but not much...). Can anyone suggest what else I can do? I really dont want to pay someone to come out to sort it especially as the closest trailer specialist is about 20 miles away. Any advice of what to try would be very gratefully received!

I have had this problem and had to sort of bash the brakey bit through the spokes of the wheel, sort of (it was over a decade ago and without looking at the trailer wheel difficult to remember what I was actually bashing).

The answer was to never leave it parked with the brake on, chocks only, so that the brakes don't seize. Which is helpful, but not much when they're already seized. If they're really bad you may need to remove the wheels to get to the jammed bit.

Hmmm, someone much more mechanically minded than me will come along, I'm sure with better explanations/help. Hope you get it sorted in time.

When mine did this I hit the wheels really hard a few times with a hammer to free them up. Not sure if what I'm going to say next is technically sound, but they haven't done it since I have done the following when parking: parked car with handbrake on. Chocked car and trailer. Released handbrake. Uncoupled trailer. Reapplied handbrake to car.

My OH who is a mechanic took a big hammer to the middle of the wheel while I moved it back and forth and freed off no problem.

I think Goldenstar could be onto something has the hitch seized in the backward position will need to connect to a vehicle and pull it forward again.

Many types of trailer have a habit of siezing up and the easiest way of freeing them is to jerk them in reverse with the towing vehicle. Not always possible if you've left it parked up against a wall!
The next best is to make up a strong bar that can be fixed across each wheel, one at a time with the trailer jacked up and then get the jerking action done by a well built helper.
Once free, give all the linkage a good service.
