OK i have a 510, have been looking at 4x4 but the new ones dont seem to be able to pull the weight of the trailer and 2 horses ! needs to pull over 2 tons !

What old 4x4 are good pullers ? must be diesel !

Thoughts please

I found this recently also. Most of the new 4x4's have little engines to cope with the emissions thing which is great until you want to tow somthing other than a tiny trailer for taking rubbish to the tip! I looked at the new Patriot but it can only tow 1.4t or thereabouts! I bought a New Jeep Cherokee as it's a short wheelbase but the Auto has towing capacity of 3t. My OH has a Isuzu trooper which can also tow about 3t. If you get a Trooper though don't but the 3.0L as he's had no end of trouble with his which is apparently quite generic with this engine. The 3.1L is OK though. Also a couple for friends of mine have Mistubishi Pajerio's (don;t know how to spell that!) and swear by them.

You may get an older land rover defender or Disco for that, or maybe a Daihatsu Fourtrack, both of which can tow 3.5t??
Good luck!!

You should be able to find an older Shogun for that - if you go for the LWB, most of them can tow up to 3.5t. I've got an "N" reg 2.8 and it tows really well and isn't too heavy on the juice.

I have a L Reg Pagero a 2.8 Full service history, that tows my old Rice trailer & a 16.3 warm blood with no worries, (Much more reliable than the Land rover Disco I had),I had the pagero up for £2800, in the spring, but then decided I couldn't part with it, so they are out there, you could have mine but I see your some distance away! I'm after a small car now, only because my partner has recently got a 5 year old Grand Cherokee!

Unfortunately there is no safe & cheap way to tow horse trailers. You need weighty 'proper' 4x4s i.e. Defender, discovery, shogun, Pajero, Range Rover, Fourtrak. If you try with other types of vehicles you will have problems, specially under braking, you will find the trailer will be pushing you & it is not a very nice feeling.

For 4k you should be able to find yourself a pretty good second hand landrover discovery diesel. They can tow pretty much anything.

Followed a Batson trebel trailer the other day wondered what the weight on one of those was?
