Hi everyone,

My friend is looking for a trailer which will take their 17hh hunter type. Any suggestions or are they better with a larger horsebox?

Thanks

We have an Ifor Williams HB511 and that really comfortably tows my two Irish Draughts (16.1 & 16.3). Whilst they're not as big as your friends horse they are WIDE and there's plenty of room for them! There's also loads of headspace which would easily fit a taller horse in. :)

My 18.1hh fits absolutely fine in an IW510- he has loads of room length wise.

Despite a high head carriage he is ok height wise, i would like a bit more for my preference but he is more than happy and loads and travels beautifully.

He actually doesn't travel that well in a horsebox as the herringbone set up doesn't give him enough length room (he is in 7'3ft rugs), even if we give him two spaces.

I have an Ifor Williams 510, no problems with travelling large horses, like Millitiger has said there is actually more room in a trailer than in a herringbone lorry.

I have an IW510 and it's ample in room for my large and long (7ft rug) CBx type mare. She has a high head carriage and is very large in stature - carrying herself more like a 17.2 I would say. She has plenty of room in the 510.

Another vote for the Ifor 510 carries my 18 hand ID/Hann no problem. He is that big he out grew our wagon that takes 3x16.2 we can't turn him round because of the lockers invading the horse area. We bought the trailer as we had a 510 in the past and kept the wagon for the others.

Following this. I'm struggling to find one to take my 17.3hh and 16.2hh.
Looking at the 510 and Bateson Deauville.

i have the richardson supreme 3 horse trailer it is huge takes a 17hh + with room to spare . it is however quite a heavy trailer and on the back of my lwb pajero mkes us approx 36 ftlong so quite an hefty combination . being quite heavy i also only have about 1200kg payload

Ifor Williams 511. Takes my daughters 18hh warmblood, but I take out the partition and use breast bar and loads of room and very light to tow.

My IW510 easily carries two 17h together, or a 17h and a 15h Ardennes heavy horse together. Plenty of room width ways and lengthways. Also easily adaptable to carry ponies with adjustable height bars. My trailer is approx. 15 years old and good as new - a worthwhile investment, they seem to hold their value if you look after them.

The old Rice Beaufort 60 will take a couple of 17.2's of 700kg. Ancient, but built to last and very stable to tow.
Some have had upgrades to 3500kg (from 2700kg) so payloads can be enormous.

I have a Wessex Olympian which has plenty of room for my 17hh ID mare and another horse. It's really stable to tow and has a left hand front ramp which gives bigger horses more room to get out. I cannot unload my large mare from a right hand unload trailer.
If you want I'm happy to take some photos of her in it so you can see how much room there is with a big horse in.

We have 17.2hh plus Irish draught hunters and I would never put them in an Ifor - they're not big enough or strong enough - I'd be terrified (and very concerned about the payload)

We have an original Rice B60 which we have restored to nearly show room condition - it is extra wide and has 7'6 headroom - plus the extra 3500 payload

We also have a Rice Richardson B60 - some more modern refinements but as well built and up to carrying 2 big horses.

We tow with a Land Rover, Ford Ranger pickup or a Landcruiser but wouldn't have to if the horses were lighter and our area less hilly!

We have an Ifor 510 and travel a 17h and 16h hunter, they both fit in with ease.

Hubby is a mechanic and very into how things are made and weights, and he likes the Ifor towed by a disco.

After 20 years with a 505 I have gone almost backward and have a Rice Beaufort; lots more room, tows well and far more stable on the road; the only thing I do miss about the 505 is the ease of being able to move it about the yard on my own as the Beaufort is built like a tank!

Heres my 16hh tb x qh and 16.2 friesian in an ifor 510 - couldn't believe how much room they had once in and was v impressed by the partition swinging forwards to allow the second horse ample turning room to get off - and the friesian is a biiig girl! It makes them look almost small. They loaded and travelled beautifully too :)

My two (16.3 and 17hh) have plenty of room on both my 510 and my friend's Equitrec. She has the Show Trekka L but the horse dimensions on the others are pretty much the same on the L versions.
