It has got to depend hiow much use it gets and what you want to do. As we spent over 5 weeks sleeping away this tyear then a lorry is totally essential.
I'm without transport at the moment but the lorry/trailer debate is forefront in my mind at the moment.
I would chose a lorry hands down if funds weren't an issue or if I were doing regular long distance travelling and overnight stays, but I have to be realistic, on the whole it would be used once a week/fortnight for day trips up to 90 minutes away therefore I will be getting a trailer towards the end of 2007.
I've got a lorry and I've never driven a trailer, so won't be buying one of those. Its fab when it's raining, you have somewhere to change, sit down, cup of tea etc. I mainly use mine to take one horse out once a week and stay away a few times a year. I've got a 6.6 ton box and it's a lot shorter than a normal lorry, no air brakes and it's just like driving a big landrover, economical on fuel as well. I love it.
Depends what your travling for one horse/pony so much nicer in a trailer as cuts the time in half then draging around a huge box....And once moving there balance is just as good in a trailer as box.
My horse is a large 15.3hh and just about fits in a 'standard' sized Ifor, but I would much prefer her in a lorry as she travels so much better in them! Sadly I can't afford a lorry, though my dad is set on buying a Defender this year so at least we won't be short of a 4x4!
Lorry pretty useless for endurance events as you still need to take a crew car along. With a trailer you just unhitch. Both mine travel well in trailers.
I've used both (never owned either) and I'm about to get a lorry because they're just so much better for the horse to travel in, more space, comfier etc etc
Lorry and lorry, but only because we do that much stuff, usually have three to take and need the changing/storage space. When kids go, am going back to a trailer. Oddly, I don't worry as much about my lorry being nicked as I did my trailer - which I guarded with my LIFE!
Had trailer for 5 years then bought a 7.5t lorry in May this year.
I can honestly say I will never go back to a trailer. Cost of running the lorry inc tax and insurance plus a small run around car is cheaper than the trailer and 4x4 I had. Running the 4x4 around as an every day car was a huge cost.
Feel much happier traveling the horses in the lorry, particularly as I do a lot of motorway miles to comps.
Lorry is used at least once a week and often more so no worries about it seizing up from standing.
Remember sitting in the lorry with a few friends drinking coffee at Aston event this year with the rain hammering down on the roof. Glanced over at trailer parked next to us with 3 peeps squashed in amongst all the stuff in the car looking really miserable. Really confirmed my decision.
B and J- you can have first refusal on my Ifor Williams 510
Am with a trailer now having sold my renault master horsebox. But am Just finding the cost of running my 4 x 4 a nightmare! But then had £1k to £2k sometimes even £3k bills every year for the horsebox to get it though its MOT. Maybe I had a bad horsebox?
Maybe a newer one would be cheaper to run?
Am also dreading the day when I will have to take two horses eventing in a trailer and it is pissing with rain! Hmmmm. Well one cannot have it all....
We own a lorry but frequently borrow trailers for short journeys with one hore or if we have different horses going to different places on the same day. I like the lorry if it's raining but I like the trailer if we're going somewhererally muddy because I trust the landy not to get stuck, the lorry gets stuck on slightly damp grass!
