I am posting this here as I figure I will find the most frequent trailer users!!

I have recently had my IW stolen (grrr) and having had the insurance payout, am looking to replace. So, my question is do I do a straight replacement and get another IW510 (which I was very happy with) or do I find some extra money and go for an Equitrek? I like the idea of the extra space at the front for all of your stuff to keep the car more clear but am not sure I can really justify the extra money for it.

I would be very interested to hear people's experiences of towing and using an Equitrek, especially if you have also used an IW in the past.

Thank you!

I used my Ivor Williams for years and when I sold it I almost got back what I'd paid for it, so they really hold their value. I don't know anything about the Equitrek but I know they are quite expensive, not sure I could justify that on a trailer to be honest. What do you have to tow it with? Are they heavier than the IW, does that matter to your vehicle?

You could always get an IW tack box..

Thanks for your reply. I agree with you re the IWs holding their value - I got back almost what I bought it for from the insurance company despite it being about four years old.

I agree that the tackpack is the cheaper solution of the two!! There actually isn't that much weight differential (surprisingly) between them so towing per se shouldn't be that different.

I guess it's just an opportunity to consider 'upgrading' but I would love to hear from someone with an Equitrek to get some insight other than from the dealer, if that makes sense?

i think if you check back there are other people on here that have equitreks. i have a space treka and love it! and i think they hold there value really well. if you have a look there arent many second hand ones for sale couse everyone wants them. if you have a dealer near you they should let you try one out. feel free to ask me any Qs

A show trekka is about 250kg heavier than a 510 and the Star range is around 1750kg unladen with all bells and whistles.

The space trekka isn't that much different in weight to a 510.

However Ifors hold their money and don't go wrong, I have heard the ramps can go wrong on Equitreks and due to not being aluminium their lifespan might be shorter.

I have a 510 and looked at the equitrek, but decided it wasn't worth it until you get up to something the size of the show trekka.

However I really want a loo for my father (very important as he has had bowel cancer). So I decided it had to be a 5 star, which means I could only ever travel one horse at a time and a lorry would be cheaper.

So I am now on the lookout for a leyland lorry with a loo! If you compete regularly would you be better off with a lorry?

Thanks for your reply - sorry, have been off-line for a couple of days.

Do you find the Equitrek tows well? Are you happy handling it on your own - hitching, unhitching, dealing with the ramp etc etc? Does having the grooms area really justify the extra money???!!! Have you had any problems with yours since you've had it?

Any information would be very gratefully received.

Thank you.

Ive got a Show Trekka and upgrading to the Star trekka soon

. The trailer tows brilliantly. I dont have any problems hitching/unhitching with it - even took my trailer test with it. No problems with the ramp. The living is really worth the extra as are the tack lockers. Thats why we are upgrading as we want more extras than we currently have in the Show Trekka. Weve had no problems with the trailer since we bought it in June last year.

just got bad news - im not getting it now till January as theyve had lots of trailers in from flood damage - oh I suppose a month wont matter what with possible bad weather.

I've got a large show treka and love it. It tows really well and the horse area is really light and airy. I'm on 5ft and do all the loading / hithing, etc. on my own, no problems. If you've already got a 4x4 then much cheaper to run than a lorry. My old horse wouldn't travel in anything than a lorry - used to throw himself on the floor in a trailer (!!), so bought a lorry, but when I sold it I took a chance and bought an equi-trek and he loaded and travelled in it like it was a lorry !! Front area isn't huge, but enough room to get changed and have a cup of something hot when out and about. They also hold their value really well, particularly if you buy a nearly new one, you won't lose much more than you would an IW.

Good luck . . .
