I don't own a horse trailer as i have never had to transport a horse before... obviously, because i have only ever shared horses. Like mentioned on a previous post, i'm looking to buy my 1st horse now though... and want to make sure i have everything sorted before beginning to go and view ones i see and like.

So what should i do about 'getting it home' when i find the horse who looks and feels right for me.

Can i rent a trailer for the day? is that possible?
Or should i purchase one? Can i get 2nd hand one relatively reasonable?

Ohh and i wanted to ask this question the other day but i felt like a completely plonker asking it - But i just need to ask it now because its bugging me!

--- When purchasing a horse, do most people expect paying via cash in hand? Or is usually it done by debit transfer or another method or what?? I know some situations may vary, but whats the most common method of payment?

Thanks!

You can hire a trailer/lorry or you can get the person selling it to deliver for you.

I paid for George by cheque and I am about to pay for another horse by cheque. I don't like carrying big wads of cash around with me.

I hired a company with a small lorry to go pick up my new horse for me as I didn't want the stress of doing it myself (was a long drive 3+ hours each way)

I paid for the horse by bankers draft as I didn't go to collect the horse and I wouldn't have wanted to carry that much cash about anyway!

I've always paid by bank transfer - its seems like the safest for both sides.

Generally I'd hire someone to collect the horse for you - its normaly a stressful time - old owners upset etc - horse aware that something different is going on. If you leave it in the hands of the proffesionals you don't have the extra stress and wait at the yard until it arrives.

You can pick up trailers reasonably but make sure you take someone mechniacally aware with you - and if it has a woodden floor - check it, check it again and then once more!!!!

Thanks!
I think the hiring someone to do it for me sounds like a perfect option.
Does anyone have a link they could give me to a company who collect and drop off horses for people?
If links aren't allowed, just PM me plz

If you have got a good pulling vehicle I would try to buy / borrow / hire a trailer. However, if you haven't got a good pulling vehicle, I would hire / borrow a small lorry - I think they are about £100 a day though! Probably best to get the horse delivered but you may want to go and see it being loaded etc to make sure everything is ok!

You can pay for a horse by any means providing the seller accepts it. If you pay by cheque, most people will want to cash it before letting the horse go. I would prefer to pay by cheque because it is more traceable than cash if anything should go wrong.

Someone said to me that you could buy a horse on a credit card if the seller accepted them and that would guarantee the horse, but I really can't see much truth in that myself!
