Trailers?

Right my mum and dad are going to invest in a trailer for me and get a car to tow it with, but I am wondering what trailers we could go for, As ben is 17.2 I guess we would have to make sure the trailer is big enough, I Dont know if we are buying new.More than likely second hand,

But not all the trailer ads have the height of what horses can go in it. Also for example say it says 2 17hh can fit in, Does that mean one 17.3 could or is the 17hh the biggest?

Also mum and dad are thinking about having van converted into a box for ben would that be worthwhile? As my dad and his brother could sort out the van as they do that kind of thing anyway. Also would obv have to get a high raised van so ben fits in. Is this possible or are we dreaimng too much?
 
I would recommend Ifor Williams HB510 - I had the 505 which was great for mine but the 510 is bigger. I would say you can get 2 x 17.2 hh providing the car is capable of towing the weight.

Van would be OK, but you would only get Ben in on his own - personally wouldn't recommend that. I would go for a bigger lorry or a trailer.
 
If the ad says two 17hh horses can fit in it, a 17.3hh won't fit. I love my Ifor Williams, if you go for an Ifor Williams get a 510. TBH I don't think converting a van would be worthwhile, and if you're buying secondhand check out the floor well, most of the newer Ifors have aluminium floors, but the older versions don't.
 
See I thought it would be pushing it with the van as ben is so big, As the weights would be a bit iffy, He would be the only one in it but how risky would that be? I actually think they was going to convert either a big van or a truck thing?

How big is your horse?I Was looking and the 510 was the best to go for, but just wanted to see if you could get one horse in a 505 at the height of ben? I thought I would ask as not sure? And weighing up the pros and cons of it all.
 
I know what you are saying, but I thought I would ask as if you had the horse in the whole trailer without the partition then maybe I thought they could? I am not a trailer person so dont laugh at dumb questions

We have a 505 (when we were buying a trailer we didn't see the point in having anything higher...), and Ali's head nearly touches the ceiling and he's only 16.1hh!
 
If she have a 17.3 and can't afford a lorry then you need the 510, a 505 won't be high enough. The 510 is higher and longer with more space
 
See I thought that might be the case, I was just wondering, I did notice a friends horse was pushing for room at show on sunday, in a 505.
 
We could afford a lorry but my dad and his mates and brother have said they want to do one up for me the price dont matter at all to us, I just seeing what they say would work.
 
I have an Ifor Williams 505, but then I do have a petit 16h thoroughbred, but we can easily take my friends horse that is a 16.3 warm blood. Anyway, when I bought the trailer back in Nov I was asking the same questions as you, what's the difference and should I be getting the 510. The dealership said that before the 510 was introduced, the 505 was recommended to carry up to 2 x 17h horses, and people used to. I think so long as you have a good 4x4 to tow the 510 with, the this should be plenty big enough for Ben, and also with another horse - but the main thing to check for is the breaking capacity of the vehicle that you intend to tow the trailer with. The heavier the ladened trailer, then the stronger the towing vehicle that you need.

Thanks for that. A great help I did know the i for williams I would need a 510 as the 505 are small.

I dont think ben would fit into a van conversion even with the roof raised, Well he probably would but the weight I think would be an issue.

So we are going to either get a decent 4x4 and buy a trailer or go for a lorry we need to weigh up how often I would be using it to whether it would be worth it.
