Hi there,

Can anyone recommend a trainer that will come to your yard and re-start a horse?

I have 2 horses on my own land so cannot take one away for residential training which is all I can seem to find!

I need someone kind / calm as my boy has been badly beaten in the past so needs someone sympathetic.

I have only heard good things about Jason Webb but he only does re-starts at his own yard it appears.

Any advice welcome, thank you :)

I think most really good trainers will only take in horses to start, the logistics of going out to work with a young horse at it's home mean it is not likely to be cost effective, it is not the same as a trainer giving a lesson that can be more structured, working with difficult horses means really getting to know them, possibly bringing them out several times a day to do a little work then leaving them to relax and settle.
Add the travelling time to an hourly rate and it will soon tot up, probably far more than the cost of sending away, you may find someone who works freelance without a lot on that is willing to commit to coming out every day to work with you but it will require real commitment to make it work and for them to build up the trust with a nervous horse if they only see it at working time.

I have in the past tried to do backing this way but it was far more difficult than having them in, getting to know them and being able to spend that extra time when there are a few spare minutes to just go in the stable and give them a scratch.

Mark Boxhall is supposed to be pretty good- he's at Speedgate and Preston farm. I have Alex Wyatt - fantastic!

I am in meopham so if you hear of someone else and would like an opinion (if I know them that is!) pm me as unfortunately I've seen a fair few I would stay well away from teaching their previous clients!

Thanks Perfect-Piaffe, I'm within walking distance of Speedgate so I might give Mark a call and see what he offers.

I understand that sending a horse away is the ideal and if I didn't have my other one, I would have no hesitation to do so - I just can't leave him on his own for a number of weeks :)
