Musing today, about Mr Mullins on the brink of winning the championship again after winning 20 races over here (ish!).
As the Grand National has such a disproportionate purse would it not make sense for it to be a stand alone race and not included in the championship?
As it stands if you win the National you are pretty sure of winning the championship.
Having said that, come on the Skeltons!

Dan Skelton added a tidy little bit extra yesterday so will be interesting to see but as you say, the Grand National prize money does distort it rather

I'm going to disagree that if you win the National you are pretty sure of winning the championship.

It has only happened twice so far this century that the same trainer has won the GN and the Championship - Paul Nicholls/Neptune Collonges in 2012 and Willie Mullins last year. Obviously we don't know about this year yet!

And in the last 20 years of last century (1980-1999) there was only one instance - David Elsworth/Rhyme 'n' Reason in 1988.

I think what swung it so massively this year was the place money. The winner's purse was £500k, but Willie's other horses (2nd/3rd/5th/7th) added another £360k.

I do feel for Dan Skelton - he just said on the Opening Show that the result last Saturday 'did rather take the jam out of my doughnut' 😂

Yes, I’ve just caught up. Neither Mr Skelton nor Mr Mullins on the score board yet.
Any news on Valgrand? It was a horrible fall.

Apparently Valgrand may need to stay locally as he's dazed, hopefully he can recover and there aren't long term effects

Great ride by Harry in that race

Why do they persist with Mr Incredible did he pull himself up again? I was watching to see what he did and suddenly he disappeared? He's trying to tell them he doesn't enjoy it

I don't often give him credit, but that was superb. As if he had a turbo button! He never used his whip after the last either (and possibly not before it?) - hand and heels all the way. I led up Captain Cody at Aintree a couple of years ago and he has really grown up and filled out since then.

It was not nice viewing. I missed the first few fences (and I’m glad I did), I stopped watching as it was carnage.

It was exactly why I don’t like marathon chases… and on a fast track and hard ground was a disgusting spectacle.
Harry Cobden did ride an amazing ride, and was that a dig at his guv’nor when he said ‘that’s what you can do when you are allowed to ride your way’. (Or words to that effect). He’s said before PN insists on him riding from the front.

I do largely agree with you about long distance chases @Clodagh , and I did miss the beginning of this race, but it seemed to be that on this occasion most of the drama happened before the extended distance had become a factor ie. within the first 2.5 or so miles?

Yes, fair point, so maybe the distance not an issue but the going meaning they were going like stink can’t have helped.
I hope there is a proper investigation because quite apart from racing not needing the publicity I can’t think many even die hard fans enjoyed watching that.

There was a chestnut i saw in the background on the home straight as they were finishing, think jockey was in JP colours, who i THINK was moving OK, but not sure if he was just one who pulled up rather than the broken down one. Not sure which one the broke down one was/the jockey silks to know if it was him

A chestnut was carried out as a horse pulled up. I don’t think they were JP silks but were definitely green.

It was walking on air who broke down I believe.
