I avoid using them really i think they just give you a false feel and mask over problems with the horse or rider! A good trainer and alot of work is the way forward! Because people who cover the problems with training aids begin to think they are in control remove the aid = taking away the control and you always get found out in the end
When we were SJing, I used to use my bungee all the time, and often used draw reins too. It certainly helped me to get that 'rounded' look when schooling, and also to give her a better shape over a fence, but now I have given up SJing and turned to dressage, I have been quite shocked by the false impression that these aids have created. Over the years, Ellie has developed a way of going that is all wrong; she is on the forehand, hollow and not working through from behind. As such, I have not used any of aids for a while now; it is hard work to get her working correctly without any additional aids, but I dont actually think that bungees and draw reins achieve anything in terms of the 'correct' way of going.
One thing I do not agree with is people using a bungee or draw reins to 'keep control' of the horse; I recall a conversation on here a few weeks ago where someone was nervous about taking the bungee off her horse because she had 'never ridden her without one.' I do not think they should ever be used in this way!
i don;t use anything other than usual tack when riding but do use a pessoa to lunge in occasionally, i like them because they allow the horse to alter his head position rather than fix it, H goes v well in one and it really helps him work from behind and stretch forwards into the contact.
I have used a Harbridge - it was fantastic. I had tried and tried to get baron to work in a lower outline so popped a Harbridge on, worked like magic. Did not force him in any way, did not interfere directly with my contact and only needed to use it for a few weeks and it has had a lasting result. My instructor was amazed.
Draw reins - have used, and may use again. Good in the right hands for the right reasons. Not good for inxperienced hands trying to create a outline (usually a false one).
Side reins - hate them, especially when people ride in them.
Pessoa - use loads for lunging, really helps baron work over his back.
So far they are the only things I have used/have opinions on. I am not a huge fan of training aids but they can be useful.
I'm like MizElz - i use to use a bungee so i could get that 'false' outline but over the past year (and with a different horse) i have learnt so much more about the correct way of going, what i'm supposed to do and what is supposed to happen etc etc that I want to stay away from any kind of training aid i can! I'm just doing things the old fashioned way - lots and lots of schooling, but also making sure that he is happy as well by hacking and having some fun!
I lunge in a bungee, i would like to use a pessoa but he hates things around his bum so am stuck with the bungee for the time being - but i am getting him used to having a bandage around his back end so might end up using that and a chambon xx
