Hi all dont usually post in here but need a bit of advice.

Today picked up a 8 week old JR terrier. Have always had terriers but havnt had a pup for years lost my elderly terrier a few months back but she was a grand old age and was the last pup i had and i was a teenager then so mum helped out alot.

Any tips on house training, disapline training ect ect.

So far seems ok, hes done all his wees outside so must be doing something right see him sniffing leg it to the garden with lots of praise, had a no.2 accident but suppose its to be expected. We had half hour of whining when daughter went to bed as in theory its her puppy and she hasnt left his side all day so think he wanted to go to her bed.

Gonna go to vets tommorow fir injections, wormer ect. so thats all covered.

See about a good training class when you're at the vets tomorrow. As you say, lots of praise when outside and weeing and keep a very keen eye for circling and sniffing and pausing as that is usually a sign that he needs to go.

I am a big fan of crate training, Cayla has a nifty guide....my OH's brother got a JRT at Christmas time and he still eats anything that isn't nailed down and wees and poohs everywhere - with a crate you always have somewhere to put the dog for downtime or when you are going out (it's not just somewhere to shut the dog, mine is in his now, looking at me! It's where he gets his pig's ears and chicken wings and he races in there to see if there is a treat for him!) and means the dog will be a bit cleaner, they won't pee where they lie!

Our Lancashire Heeler puppy is 14 weeks tomorrow and its been a doddle, we have a crate which she is happy with and is house trained. She sits by the kitchen door and if no one notices she jumps up at the door asking to go out.

Like youI hadnt had a puppy for a very long time and Cayla advised a crate and the puppy just took to it. She sleeps in it at night and we dont hear a peep out of her, my daughter takes her up stairs at night with her. During the day she has the free range of the kitchen and when I go out I just pop her in her crate with a kong, toy etc.

Good luck with your puppy and we have to see a photo of him because its the law on this forum.:)

Hi thanks for replying. Ive got a crate the old girl might have been elderly but she was a chewer its huge its a labordors size so plenty of room for a JR!!! So might give that a go. Hes absolutly cream crakkered at the minute completly conked out so probaly going to wake up for play time when i head for bed!!! Will do some piccies now!! :D:D

As dobiegirl , our heeler took to his crate straight away. Sleeps in it at night with his toy and there isn't a peep out of him, he goes in there at bed time (11pm ish) and is let out in the morning around 7 am and he is always clean. He is loose when we are about and able to keep an eye on him, currently asleep on my knee, but is always happy to go in the crate.
If your crate is very big see if you can make it a bit smaller maybe block part of it with a box, if he has less space he is more likely to be clean in there.

Ok, well i do have another terrier, the crate is up but he never uses it, he came to me housetrained at 2 as he was my mums, he used to go in with the elderly one but havnt used it since i lost her. Now what will i do hes sleeps next to my bed at night or under it (its a duvan bed) do i put them both in it or still let the older run free, there sharing a bed at the minute. Am hoping pup learns from him a bit for the housetraing took them both out after dinner time and older one wee'd so then the pup did, hopefully hell housetrain him for me!!!;) I live in hope hey!!!

Any way heres some piccies!!:D:D

He is gorgeous. I have always found it far easier to housetrain one when I have another that is house trained. The pup learns to go when the older one does. I agree about the crates, fantastic. I made the mistake with my first dog of not crate training him and although he was an amazing dog I never managed to sort his issues with being left at home. With subsequent dogs I have crate trained immediately and they have been so easy to train.

Enjoy him, they seem to grow up so quickly.

Older one is actually really playfull and after living with a teenage grump is really pleased to have something to play with hes leaping around as much as the pup at the minute, they then have a cuddle in bed and older one wakes up for more play!!!! I knew he missed company!!!! Hes only 4 the older one so hes not actually a complete oldie!!Would feel guilty about locking him up because of a new pup arriving, but have heard good things about a crate.
