Training/backing - one person, no helper.

Has anyone else come across a young horse that is much calmer if there is only one person working with them?

I have one like this. She isnt spooky at all and really works with me until there is another person around. Even if they are stood watching she is on full alert.

I have done everything alone as a result and she is coming on really well. Im hoping her trust will come as her confidence grows.

We find a lot of our foals/ yearlings prefer 1 person in their stable, grooming or whatever, not sure why really, only that they get suspicious when theres 2 of you (always means something bad is coming!!!) Would always have someone at their head when backing though but nomore than that usualy, too many people seems offputting. Depends on the horses though I guess ... and what they're used to, who they trust etc....

My little mare. She would violently nap towards, and then attempt to double barrel any foot soldier!!
Once she had learnt to obey the leg aid I could then prevent it and so she stopped doing it and now is fine.
So YES she definitely went through a phase where we were better off alone!

Yes, I always assumed it was because all the way through pretty much we do things by ourselves, and then it comes to backing and suddenly we draft in helpers.

I reckon it makes the horse think it must BE something scary!

I'm so glad that I'm not the only one with a horse like this. He doesn't object to someone else watching, but someone at his head and a second person standing on the mounting block was too much. One person dealing with him - including standing on the mounting block - is fine.
