I don't use a Dually (I found I kept having to reajust the nose piece to prevent it sliding close to the eye region)
I do use a Parelli halter on Malaga (Who's no longer Mad Malaga
) and it works O.k. with him,but are you talking about training or for riding?
I have a yearling so it would be for training and walks out, however would like to do some lunging and lining with him too. . Wasn't sure which one to go for.
I bought a Dually when I got my untouched 3 year old, I didn't look back!!! My problem was not so much halting though as an unwillingness to come forward when asked. I don't need it anymore but is handy to have around.
Have to say my dually is fab! i wouldnt have been able to load my mare without it... I used it on my 14hh pony and my 16hh horse i used to ride bareback in it on my pony (dont trust the horse quite enough though!). I lunged my pony but my mare gets a bit excited when lunging in it. I think thats purely because shes not used to it!
Ah yes I know, he's coming to me halter broken, farrier trained, tied, been for walks and seen traffic - and didn't blink an eye when he came face to face with a big scary digger! I'd just like something to walk him out in and for general training purposes
I really like my Dually, I was sceptical to begin with but it works much better than a chifney for my pushy Welsh D x. He was properly trained with it at a Monty demo and since then I use it for clipping, shoeing and when I lead him on the road. Its much better to be sure you have control, it is really important to get the groundwork right and that you use it properly.
I used to use a Dually for my mare who wouldnt load and seen as it was there I used to use it for all sorts of things. It was especially usefull for an unbitted youngster on box rest and trotting up my mare for the vetting as she gets quite excited!
I loved mine (now too small for my huge boy!) but I am thinking of getting another as he can be very bargy (and at 17hh that is not fun lol!)
In the case of the rope halters at least, it's not really got a lot to do with the halter, more what you do with it. They don't close or put any special pressure on the horse (and no, the knots don't sit in magical pressure points). But they do give you a lighter feel for groundwork and riding, and if your horse is bargy (sounds like yours is far too well brought up!), the fact that they are a bit thinner discourages leaning.
I have led youngsters out in rope halters with 12ft lines a lot, but some people feel that you wouldn't be insured without a bit. I've not found anything to support that personally, and am insured to ride out bitless.
Only have one on your horse if you are holding the end of the lead rope - never use any kind of training halter to tie up in, leave in horsebox with, etc. I have a parelli type ones (thanks lodgeropes) which suit me very well.
