Has anyone done this? Where did you train and how long did it take? I've always found equine nutrition really interesting, and would love to turn it into a job, but I haven't a clue how to go about it.

You'd need to do a first degree (BSc in Equine Science, for example) and then a postgrad (MSc).
Similar subjects might also be acceptable, but you'd need to have significant equine science content amongst whatever biological science degree you might have.

Oh, heck. Sounds like I'd need to take another degree before I could do anything.

Animal Management and Science: Hons Degree (Three Year route) Would that work, then onto the ones you said?

Is that the degree you are doing now? I think that would be fine. What sort of nutritionist do you want to be: freelance or for a company? Do you want to be office based and develop new feeds etc. or be field based and go out to yards etc. I used to work for a feed company. Feel free to pm any questions.

If it's any good, I have just had a reply from a feed company regarding a feed question & these are the qualifications typed after the name of the person providing the advice:

BSc Dip ACNS

No- I'm planning to start it next September. I was going to start it this year, but life didn't work out right.

Freelance vs feed company, I'm not sure at this point. Would have to see which looked the better option for me later on. I'm drawn towards freelance/visiting yards though.

I think that would work, but you'd probably need to do an MSc in Equine Science to ensure you had the equine content.

Okay, stupid question time- do you have to ride to do a MSc in Equine Science?

Thanks.

No, no riding involved at all, so no riding assessment required either for entry.

You'll need a 2:1 in equine science, animal science or a similar biological science undergraduate degree though.
If you go to www.prospects.ac.uk then click on postgrad courses, and put 'equine' in as a keyword, it will show you all the places that do MSc Equine stuff.

Thank you! I shall have a dig through there.

Would the animal management degree I posted fit the entry requirements?

[/ QUOTE ]

I can't answer that - it depends on each institution how they specify their entry requirements.
