Hi,

I haven't posted on here for a while but thought this might be a good place to get some answers to some questions I have.

I am seriously considering part time study alongside part time work to become an Equine Veterinary Nurse. I am interested in three year course which offers Equine Pathway included in it. I have 10 GCSEs Grade A*- C and understand that 5 GCSEs are required, currently work as a Freelance Groom/Rider/Instructor and have my own horses so plenty of experience, including helping Vets with my horses and others and Equine Dentists etc. I also have BHS Stages 1-3 and part of my Stage 4. I attained the National Award in Horse Management (Level 3 course) at College several years ago too so pretty certain I have what is needed for entry into the course.

My questions are:
Who do I contact to find out more information? Would contacting my horse's Vet be a good starting point?
Can anyone suggest a University/College that I should go through? (I'm in Leicestershire)
Which is the recognised course to do? i.e which governing body?

Also, I'd love to hear first hand experience from Equine Veterinary Nurses or people who have completed/are in the process of completing this course. What was it like? What does it entail?

Many thanks :)

I cannot help you with your questions but I couldnt just read and run. When Dennis was struck down by grass sickness ,vets treated nim ,but veterinary nurses saved his life. I saw what a hard job it is ,you cannot win them all but every patient matters . Go for it ,and may I extend my utmost respect for the profession you wish to follow and those that do so.Edited to add that Dennis recovered and went on to compete Int/novice BE and now has a happy semi retirement doing PC tetrathlon.

You can find the RCVS list of approved training practices for equine vet nursing here http://www.rcvs.org.uk/document-library/equine-tp-list/ But for most I've looked at you need to have the academic qualification first. It looks (at first glance anyway) to be easier to qualify as a small animal vet nurse and then do the equine top up pathway.

You might also fine the Vet Nurse times useful - here https://www.vetnurse.co.uk/

Its very competitive I'm afraid.

I *think* both Nottingham Trent and Nottingham uni run equine vet nurse qualifications. Many years ago I went for an interview to be a small animal vet nurse and you basically got a job then the practice you work for arranged collage etc for you.

It might be worth calling a few of the bigger vet practices in your area to see if they can advise the best way to get into nursing?

Ps I think you'd be ace at it :)
